Auggies post 85-73 victory over Willamette

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Behind a season-best 51.2 percent shooting effort, the Augsburg College men's basketball team scored an 85-73 nonconference victory over Willamette University on Saturday evening at the Colorado College Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg College used a season-best 51.2 percent (22-of-43) effort from the field to propel the team to its first victory of the young season. The Auggies shot an impressive 47 free throws, converting 38, while holding Willamette to 16-of-23 from the charity stripe.
• After giving up the opening basket of the game, Augsburg used a 16-3 run to claim its first double-digit lead of the game at the 14:28 mark. Willamette was able to cut the Auggie lead to four before Augsburg was able to extend the lead back to 42-31 at the half. The Bearcats were able to again cut the Augsburg lead to four midway through the second frame, but the Auggies countered with an 11-2 run to extend the lead back to double-digits and were able to hit 12-of-14 from the charity stripe in the final 3:16 to seal the win.
Collin Olmscheid (JR, Buffalo, Minn.) put up a season-best 27 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor and 11-of-13 from the free-throw line. Olmscheid has now scored 20-plus points in three of the team's four games this season.
Richie Perea (SR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Wasson HS) and Harry Sonie (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) both hit a season-best 19 points. Perea added a team-best three assists, while Sonie picked up a game-high four steals.
• On the boards, Augsburg was led by Chaney Pal (JR, Fridley, Minn.), who pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while adding three points and a blocked shot.
Chuckie Smith (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) also finished in double figures for Augsburg, claiming 11 points, a rebound, a steal and an assist.

• For the game, Augsburg shot a season-best 51.2 percent (22-of-43) from the field, while Willamette converted on 45.5 percent (25-of-55) of its field-goal attempts. Augsburg claimed a 31-30 advantage on the boards and had 16 turnovers to Willamette's 21.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The last time Augsburg shot more than 40 free throws in a game dates back to Nov. 16, 2013, when the Auggies collected 42 free-throw attempts in a 79-77 victory over Simpson College. The Auggies' 47 free throws fell just short of the school record of 50, set back in 1964 in a game against Macalester, while Augsburg's 38 made free throws fell just one short of the school record of 39, set in a 1983 game against Hamline.

FOR THE FOES
• The Bearcats were led offensively by Casey Thornton, who posted 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor, while adding eight rebounds and a pair of assists.
• Nico Troplent also finished in double figures for Willamette, recording 11 points, while adding three rebounds an assist and a steal.

• Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (11/30) at 7 p.m., when the Auggies open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at Hamline University.
