Augsburg posts 69-60 victory over Hamline to open MIAC play

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team used an 18-4 run over the final 3:44 of play to post a 69-60 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Hamline University on Wednesday night at Hutton Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• In a game that saw six tie scores and 11 lead changes, the Auggies' game-ending run proved to be the difference maker, as the Auggies opened conference play with a victory over rival Hamline.
• After trailing 30-27 at the half, Augsburg shot 52.0 percent (13-of-25) from the floor in the second frame, including 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from three-point range en route to its second consecutive victory.
• Augsburg was led offensively by Chuckie Smith (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS), who posted 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor, while adding a season-best four steals.
• Collin Olmscheid (JR, Buffalo, Minn.) posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, marking his third double-double of the young season. He played all 40 minutes in the game.
• Kevin McKiernan (SO, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) claimed a season-best 14 points, which included a clutch 6-of-6 effort at the free-throw line in the final 32 seconds to seal the victory for Augsburg. McKiernan added five rebounds and three assists to his stat line.
• Also finishing in double figures for Augsburg were Nick Varner (JR, Farmington, Minn.) and Nick Sabatke (JR, Eagan, Minn.), who recorded 13 and 10 points respectively.

• For the game, Augsburg shot 47.2 percent (25-of-53) from the field, while Hamline converted on 39.3 percent (22-of-56) of its field-goal attempts. Augsburg claimed a narrow 32-31 advantage on the boards, but was able to outscore the Pipers 28-10 in points in the paint.

FOR THE FOES
• The Pipers finished with three players in double figures, led by Zach Smith, who finished with a game-high 18 points, while adding four assists and three rebounds.
• Jay Betts scored 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor, while adding three steals and three rebounds.

• Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (12/3) at 7 p.m., when the Auggies host the University of St. Thomas in a men's and women's doubleheader. The women tip-off at 1 p.m. and the men at 3 p.m.
• Hamline also returns to action Saturday (12/3), when the Pipers host Bethel University in MIAC action.
