Auggies upset No. 12 St. Thomas 76-70

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team upset the defending NCAA Division III national champion University of St. Thomas 76-70 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg led for just over 36 minutes of the action and was able to extend its lead to as many as 12 points early in the second half. The Tommies were able to tie the game at 67-67 at the 6:09 mark, but Augsburg used an 10-3 run to close the game and seal the key conference victory. 
Chuckie Smith (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) led all players with 19 points on a 7-of-15 shooting afternoon. Smith has scored in double figures in all six games this season.
• Coming off the bench, Chany Pal (JR, Fridley, Minn.) scored a season-high 15 points, connecting on an impressive 6-of-7 from the floor. He added six rebounds and a pair of assists on the afternoon.
• Also finishing in double-figures was Kevin McKiernan (SO, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS), who was clutch at the free-throw line for the second consecutive game, hitting 6-for-6 on the afternoon, while scoring 11 points in 28 minutes of action.
Richie Perea (SR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Wasson HS) finished with a game-high five assists, while adding eight points and three steals.
• The Auggie defense forced a season-high 13 Tommie turnovers and was able to claim a 21-5 advantage in points off-turnovers.
• The Augsburg reserves were able to claim a 33-24 advantage in bench points.
• For the game, Augsburg shot 46.3 percent (25-of-54) from the field, while St. Thomas converted on 40.4 percent (23-of-57) of its field-goal attempts. St. Thomas was able to claim a 37-31 advantage on the boards and a 20-10 advantage in second chance points


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg's win over the Tommies is its second in a row, after posting a 98-89 win on Feb. 10, 2016 at Si Melby Hall.

FOR THE FOES
• The Tommies, ranked No. 12 in the latest D3hoops.com Division III national poll, finished with four players in double figures, led by Michael Hannon, who finished with 15 points on the afternoon.
• Jordan Burich posted the lone double-double on the afternoon, finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
