Augsburg men fall to Saint John's

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team couldn't keep up with Saint John's University in the second half and fell 91-74 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The first half was a back-and-forth affair, featuring 11 tie scores and eight lead changes. The Johnnies held Augsburg scoreless over the final 1:45 of the frame and took a 40-36 lead into the locker room at the half.
• Saint John's started the second half on a 20-6 run and kept Augsburg from getting into its offensive rhythm, while shooting 63.6 percent (14-of-22) from the floor to secure the 91-74 victory.
• Collin Olmscheid (JR, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) led all players with a game-high 25 points and game-high nine rebounds. This is the fourth time this season that Olmscheid has scored 20-plus points.
• Chuckie Smith (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) finished with 15 points and a pair of rebounds and steals.
• Also scoring in double figures for the Auggies was Harry Sonie (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) and Kevin McKiernan (SO, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS), who finished with 12 points apiece. Sonie finished a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line and added three assists.
• For the game, Augsburg connected on 41.4 percent (24-of-58) of its shot attempts, while St. John's shot 52.8 percent (28-of-53)  from the floor.
• The Johnnies claimed a 36-24 advantage on the boards and a 38-24 advantage in points in the paint.


FOR THE FOES
• Saint John's finished with four players in double figures, led by Tyler Weiss, who finished 11-for-14 from the floor for a team-high 24 points, while adding six rebounds and an assist.
• David Stokman also had a strong night for the Johnnies, finishing with 22 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.


UP NEXT
• Augsburg remains idle over the finals/winter break and will return to action on Monday, Jan. 2, when the Auggies host Concordia-Moorhead.
• Saint John's returns to action on Saturday (12/10), when the Johnnies travel to St. Paul, Minn., to take on the University of St. Thomas.
