Augsburg upsets No. 4-ranked St. Thomas 98-89

MINNEAPOLIS -- Connecting on 62.7 percent from the field, including an amazing 71.4 percent in the first half, the Augsburg College men's basketball team scored a 98-89 victory over the No. 4-ranked University of St. Thomas in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg led for all but 1:28 in the game, taking a 7-5 lead at the 17:32 mark of the first half and leading the rest of the way.
• The Auggies connected on 71.4 percent (20-of-28) shooting from the field in the first half, including 50 percent (6-of-12) from three-point range. The Auggies led by as many as 12 points, en route to a 50-41 lead at halftime.
• St. Thomas cut the lead to three points in the opening 3:12 of the second half, but the Auggies used a 14-6 run to expand its advantage to 11 points, 66-55 with 11:28 remaining. The Tommies cut the lead to one point with a 10-0 run, but Augsburg responded with a 13-2 run to expand the lead back to 12 points, 79-67 with 6:23 left. 
• Augsburg connected on 22-of-29 from the free-throw line in the second half. Augsburg's last 19 points in the game came from the free-throw line, as it went 19-of-22 from the line in the final 5:53 of the game.
Brett Rasmussen (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) led the Auggies with 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, including 4-of-4 from three-point range, and 5-of-6 shooting from the free-throw line. He added six rebounds, four assists and a steal.
• Collin Olmscheid (SO, Buffalo, Minn.) scored 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, adding four rebounds, three assists, a blocked shot and a steal.
Harry Sonie (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) scored 18 points, including 8-of-12 from the free-throw line, while adding five rebounds and three assists.
Joe Zangel (SR, Richfield, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) scored 16 points, including 6-of-7 from the free-throw line, adding eight rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Kevin McKiernan (FY, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) came off the bench to score 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field, adding two assists. Ryan Gilmer (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored eight points with three rebounds.
• Augsburg outrebounded St. Thomas by a 32-25 margin in the game. The Auggies also had 17 assists on 32 made field goals.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg's win broke a 21-game losing streak to the Tommies, dating to the 2005-06 season. Augsburg's last win over the Tommies was a 62-59 triumph on Jan. 2, 2006 at St. Thomas. The Auggies also snapped a 15-game losing streak at Si Melby Hall to the Tommies. The Auggies' last home win over the Tommies was an 86-82 victory on Jan. 5, 2000.
• In pursuit of a spot in the six-team MIAC postseason playoffs, Augsburg (9-8 MIAC) is just a game behind both Carleton and Bethel, tied for fifth place with 10-7 conference records. Augsburg has three games remaining in the regular season.
• Rasmussen has scored in double figures in 20 games this season, including a current streak of 14 straight games.
• Olmscheid has also scored in double figures in 20 games this season.
• Zangel has scored in double figures in 12 games this season.


FOR THE FOES
• St. Thomas, which has already clinched a share of the MIAC's regular-season title, also had a strong shooting night, connecting on 33-of-63 (52.4 percent) from the field, including 11-of-27 (40.7 percent) from three-point range and 12-of-16 (75.0 percent) from the free-throw line.
• The Tommies, which entered this week ranked No. 4 in the D3hoops.com Division III national poll, had its 16-game winning streak halted.
• Grant Shaeffer scored 31 points on 12-of-14 shooting from the field, including 4-of-4 from the free-throw line, to lead the Tommies. He also had six assists.
• Cortez Tillman scored 19 points with five assists. Jimmy Remke scored 14 points with seven rebounds.
• Taylor Montero scored 13 points with five rebounds and three assists. Ryan Saarela pulled down a team-high eight rebounds with four points, four assists and two steals.
