Auggies making playoff push with win over Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Behind a balanced scoring attack with four players in double figures, the Augsburg College men's basketball team continued its push for a spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs with an 80-72 win over host Carleton College on Saturday afternoon at West Gym.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg took an early lead and never looked back, leading for all but 1:28 of the game. The Auggies built a 14-point halftime advantage, leading 41-27 at the break, and led by as many as 22 points in the second half before a late Carleton rally trimmed the advantage to single digits.
• Both teams benefitted from a strong shooting performance, as the Auggies connected on 56.0 percent (28-of-50) from the field, including eight 3-pointers, while Carleton hit 57.4 percent (27-of-47), including 11 three-pointers. The Auggies also connected on 16-of-18 at the free-throw line, compared to 7-of-10 for the Knights.
• Collin Olmscheid (SO, Buffalo, Minn.) led the way for the Auggies, scoring 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field, adding six rebounds.
• Brett Rasmussen (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) scored 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field.
• Harry Sonie (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) scored 10 points with three rebounds and two assists.
• Kevin McKiernan (FY, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) came off the bench to score 13 points, hitting 3-of-4 from three-point range.

• Joe Zangel (SR, Richfield, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) scored six points with five rebounds.
• Augsburg outrebounded Carleton by a 25-18 margin in the game.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• With the win, Augsburg moved into a tie for fifth place in the MIAC standings with Carleton and Bethel. Augsburg has tiebreaker advantages over both the Knights and Royals, as the Auggies swept both teams this season.
• Rasmussen has scored in double figures in 21 games this season, including a current streak of 15 straight games.
• Olmscheid has also scored in double figures in 21 games this season.


FOR THE FOES
• Carleton was paced by Tianen Chen, who scored 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field, and Mitchell Biewen, who scored 22 points on 8-of-11 from the field.
• Peter Bakker-Arkema added 11 point
s with four assists. Kevin Grow had eight assists, and Beau Smit scored eight points with eight rebounds.
