Auggies fall victim to Scots

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team's push for a spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs will come down to the final game of the regular season, after the Auggies dropped a 71-60 decision at Macalester College on Wednesday evening.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Macalester 71, Augsburg 60
LOCATION: Leonard Center, St. Paul, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 15-9 overall (10-9 MIAC), Macalester 4-20 overall (2-17 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• A 12-0 run over a 5:05 span midway through the first half gave Macalester a double-digit lead, and the Scots held the lead the rest of the way, leading by as many as 11 points.
• Augsburg was hampered by a sub-par shooting performance, hitting just 34.5 percent (19-of-55) from the field, including 6-of-20 from three-point range. The Auggies also hit just 16-of-25 from the free-throw line, and all their points came from the five starters, with zero bench points.

• Brett Rasmussen (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) scored 16 points with five rebounds, two assists, a block and steal.

• Joe Zangel (SR, Richfield, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) scored nine points with nine rebounds and three blocked shots.
• Harry Sonie (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) scored five points with three assists and three steals.

• Macalester outrebounded Augsburg by a 42-27 margin in the game.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Despite the loss, Augsburg is in control of its own postseason destiny entering the final game of the regular season. Augsburg is tied for sixth place in the MIAC standings with Carleton, a team the Auggies swept in their two meetings this season. Augsburg would clinch the final playoff spot in the six-team MIAC postseason playoffs on Saturday (2/20) with a win over Saint John's or a Carleton loss at Gustavus.
• Augsburg could reach as high as the No. 5 seed in the playoffs, if the Auggies win on Saturday and Bethel loses at Hamline. The Auggies swept the Royals in their two meetings this season.
• Rasmussen has scored in double figures in 22 games this season, including a current streak of 16 straight games.
• Olmscheid has also scored in double figures in 22 games this season.

FOR THE FOES
• Wyatt Ferm led the Scots with 20 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots.
• Michael Gutierrez scored 10 points with five rebounds and three assists, and Kareem Ismail had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
