Auggies claim #6 seed in loss to SJU

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team secured the number six seed in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason playoffs with a 77-66 loss to Saint John's University in the MIAC regular season finale for both squads. The Auggies will have a rematch with the Johnnies as Augsburg will travel to Collegeville on Wednesday, Feb. 24 to take on the number three seeded Johnnies in the MIAC quarterfinals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• A cold shooting first half proved too much for the Auggies to overcome, as Augsburg was held to just 37.0 percent (10-of-27) in the frame. Augsburg improved their shooting performance in the second half, but so did the Johnnies as Saint John's shot 52.6 percent (30-of-57) for the game, while Augsburg was held to just 41.3 percent (26-of-63) shooting from the field.
Joe Zangel (SR, Richfield, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) claimed the only double-double of the afternoon, leading the Auggies with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while adding three assists, a block and a steal. The double-double is the third of the season for Zangel.
• Also scoring in double figures for the Auggies was Collin Olmscheid (SO, Buffalo, Minn.) who scored 17 points, while adding four rebounds a pair of assists and steals.
Richie Perea (JR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Wasson HS) led the Auggies with four assists, while adding seven points and a blocked shot.

• Augsburg claimed a 38-28 advantage on the boards and outscored the Johnnies 15-5 in second chance points.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Despite the loss, Augsburg claimed the number six seed in the MIAC playoffs, qualfying for the confernce postseason playoffs for the sixth time in the past eight seasons.
• St. Thomas claimed the number one seed and would host Augsburg on Friday, Feb. 26 with a victory over the Johnnies.
• Olmscheid has scored in double figures in 23 games this season.


FOR THE FOES
• The Johnnies finished with four players in double figures led by Alex Schmitt, who finished with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field.
• Mitchell Kuck led St. John's with seven rebounds, while adding 15 points and eigth assists.

• Augsburg and Saint John's will have a rematch on Wednesday (2/24) at 7 p.m. at Collegeville.
