Auggies gain bonus point with shootout win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Max Pernhem (SO, Stockholm, Sweden/Dragonskolan) scored a power-play goal in the second period, and his Augsburg College teammates scored two goals in an overtime shootout, as the Auggies tied the University of St. Thomas 1-1 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The game is recorded officially as a 1-1 tie, but MIAC-leader Augsburg gained a bonus point in the conference standings with a 2-1 shootout victory in six rounds. Eric Brenk (FY, Moorhead, Minn.) and Luke Dietsch (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored in the shootout, and goalie Jordyn Kaufer (SO, Stillwater, Minn.) stopped five of the six St. Thomas shots he faced.
• Pernhem scored his second goal of the season at the 14:30 mark of the second period, a power-play goal from Rory Vesel (JR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) and Andy Faust (SO, Stillwater, Minn./Hill-Murray HS).
• Kaufer stopped 37 of the 38 shots he faced in the game, improving to 13-4-1 on the season.
• Augsburg outshot St. Thomas by a 39-38 margin, including a 6-2 advantage in overtime. Pernhem had six shots on-goal for the Auggies, while Trevor Stewart (JR, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Eastmont HS) had five shots.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Extending its unbeaten streak to seven straight games (5-0-2), Augsburg now has 33 points in the MIAC standings, extending its lead in the conference race to five points over St. Thomas (28 points). With the bonus point for the shootout win, Augsburg is assured of leading the MIAC going into the final weekend of the regular season.
• Kaufer leads MIAC goalies in overall statistics in goals-against-average (1.98), save percentage (.929) and winning percentage (.750). His 13 wins are tied for second place among all 
NCAA Division III goalies nationally.
• Vesel now has 13 assists on the season, tied for sixth place among MIAC players in overall statistics.
• St. Thomas was unable to score on four power-play opportunities. Augsburg has now not surrendered a power-play goal in 10 straight games. The Auggies have killed 40 straight penalties, dating to its 5-2 win over Bethel on Jan. 8.
• Augsburg's has allowed just seven goals in 76 power-play opportunities this season, with its 90.8 penalty-kill percentage tops among MIAC teams and fourth-best among NCAA Division III teams nationally. Augsburg's combined special teams percentage of 60.4 (15-of-63 power play, 69-of-76 penalty kill) is now tops among NCAA Division III teams nationally.


FOR THE FOES
• St. Thomas tied the game at 1-1 just 3:09 after Augsburg's goal, as Connor McBride scored from Thomas Williams and Nick Nielsen.
• McBride had seven shots on-goal for the Tommies, while Nielsen had five shots and Willie Faust had four shots.
• Joe Morris had 38 saves in goal for St. Thomas.
