Auggies clinch MIAC title with 4-0 win at St. Thomas

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. -- Behind two goals from Dylan Meier (JR, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS) and goalie Jordyn Kaufer's (SO, Stillwater, Minn.) third shutout in his last five games, the Augsburg College men's hockey team clinched its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championshp since the 1997-98 season with a 4-0 win at the University of St. Thomas on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Kaufer stopped all 31 shots he faced to record his third shutout in his last five games and fourth career shutout. In his last five games (4-0-1), Kaufer has allowed just three goals. He is now 14-4-1 on the season.
• Meier scored two unassisted goals for the Auggies, scoring at the 16:12 mark of the second period and the 8:00 mark of the third period.
• Max Pernhem (SO, Stockholm, Sweden/Dragonskolan) scored from Corbin Chapman (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) at the 14:40 mark of the first period.
Drew Anderson (SO, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) capped the scoring with a goal from Lukas Gillett (FY, Rosemount, Minn.) at the 14:53 mark of the third period.
• St. Thomas outshot Augsburg by a 31-26 margin in the game.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg clinched its ninth MIAC regular-season championship in program history and its first since the 1997-98 season, which it shared with St. Thomas. Augsburg won the 1997-98 MIAC playoff title and eventually finished fourth in the NCAA Division III national playoffs.
• As the No. 1 seed in the five-team MIAC playoffs, Augsburg will host the winner of the Feb. 25 first-round playoff game between the No. 4 and No. 5 playoff seeds in the conference semifinals on Feb. 27 at Ed Saugestad Rink. The conference playoff championship game will be held at the site of the highest remaining seed on March 5, with the winner receiving the MIAC's automatic bid to the 11-team NCAA Division III national playoffs.
• Since starting the season 1-3-0, Augsburg has produced a 14-3-2 record. Augsburg is unbeaten in its last eight straight games (6-0-2), with two games remaining in the regular season.
• Kaufer leads MIAC goalies in overall statistics in goals-against-average (1.88), save percentage (.933) and winning percentage (.763). His 13 wins are tied for the most among all 
NCAA Division III goalies nationally. He ranks 14th nationally in save percentage and 15th in goals against-average.
• St. Thomas was unable to score on four power-play opportunities. Augsburg has now not surrendered a power-play goal in 11 straight games. The Auggies have killed 44 straight penalties, dating to its 5-2 win over Bethel on Jan. 8.
• Augsburg's has allowed just seven goals in 80 power-play opportunities this season, with its 91.2 penalty-kill percentage tops among MIAC teams and second-best among NCAA Division III teams nationally. Augsburg's combined special teams percentage of 60.7 (15-of-65 power play, 73-of-80 penalty kill) is tops among NCAA Division III teams nationally.

• Michael Pieper and Johnny Roisum had five shots on-goal each for St. Thomas, while Thomas Williams had four shots.
• Joe Morris had 22 saves in goal for St. Thomas.

• Augsburg closes the regular season with a series against Saint John's. Next Friday's (2/19) game is at 7:05 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink, and next Saturday's (2/20) game is at 7 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
