Saint John's rallies for 5-3 win over Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College scored three goals in the first 6:18 of play, but visiting Saint John's University rallied with five goals the rest of the way, claiming a 5-3 win over the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey regular-season champs on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg jumped on the scoreboard early, claiming three goals in a 2:04 span early in the game.
Trevor Stewart (JR, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Eastmont HS) opened the scoring with a goal from Lukas Gillett (FY, Rosemount, Minn.) and Drew Anderson (SO, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) at the 4:14 mark of the first period.
• Augsburg then scored two goals in a 13-second span to take a 3-0 lead. Corbin Chapman (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) scored from Lucas Hendrickson (SR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) and Luke Dietsch (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) at the 6:05 mark, and Anderson scored from Stewart and Gillett at the 6:18 mark.
Jordyn Kaufer (SO, Stillwater, Minn.) claimed 21 saves in goal for Augsburg.
• Augsburg outshot Saint John's by a 33-26 margin in the game.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The loss snapped an eight-game (6-0-2) unbeaten streak for the Auggies. Since starting the season 1-3-0, Augsburg has produced a 14-4-2 record to claim its ninth MIAC regular-season championship and top seed in the five-team MIAC postseason playoffs.
• Saint John's scored on consecutive power plays in the first period, snapping a streak of 44 straight penalties killed by the Auggies, including a stretch of 11 straight games.


FOR THE FOES
• Huba Sekesi scored a goal and added an assist for the Johnnies, scoring the eventual game-winning goal at the 6:33 mark of the third period.
• Tyler Dunagan and Mitch Firtz scored power-play goals for Saint John's in th efirst period, and Matt Colford scored a goal in the second period. He also had a goal and assist for the Johnnies.
• Saxton Soley had 30 saves in goal for Saint John's.
