Jones nets 47 saves in goal for Auggies

ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- Brandon Jones (SR, Fridley, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) claimed 47 saves in goal for Augsburg College, but his squad dropped a 4-2 decision to Saint John's University in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey regular-season finale on Saturday evening at the National Hockey Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg held a 2-1 lead after two periods, but Saint John's rallied with three goals in the third period to score the win and the series sweep over the MIAC regular-season champions.
• Luke Dietsch (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) opened the scoring with a goal 50 seconds into the game, assisted by Corbin Chapman (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) and Nate Flynn (SO, Hastings, Minn.).
• Chapman gave the Auggies a 2-1 lead at the 15:33 mark of the second period, assisted by Rory Vesel (JR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) and Brett Bukowski (SO, Superior, Wis.).
• Making his fifth start of the season, Jones collected 47 saves in goal, including 17 saves in the first period and 20 saves in the second period.
• Saint John's outshot Augsburg by a 51-26 margin in the game. Dietsch and Evan Hesse (SO, Monticello, Minn./Palmer (Alaska) HS) had four shots on-goal each.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The MIAC's regular-season champions, Augsburg will host a conference playoff semifinal game next Saturday (2/27) at 7:05 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink. The top-seeded Auggies will host the winner of next Thursday's (2/26) quarterfinal game between No. 5-seed Hamline and No. 4-seed Concordia-Moorhead.

FOR THE FOES
• Andrew Commers scored a pair of goals in the third period, a power-play marker from Sean Lang and Huba Sekesi at the 4:10 mark and an empty-net goal from Dan Voce and Sean Lang at the 19:30 mark. His two goals bracketed an unassisted goal by Lang at the 10:45 mark.
• Sekesi scored from Zach Glienke and Matt Colford at the 11:19 mark of the first period.
• Saxton Soley had 24 saves in goal for Saint John's.
