Auggie lacrosse opens 3rd season with victory

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College women's lacrosse team opened its third varsity season with a victory, edging the University of Dubuque 12-11 in a nonconference game on Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Ashley Pettipiece (SO, Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) and Rachel Frantz (JR, Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) scored three goals each to lead the Auggies, with Pettipiece adding an assist for a four-point night.
• Aliya Hinz (FY, Loretto, Minn./Delano HS) made her collegiate debut with a two-goal night.
• Helena Nguyen (SO, Maple Grove, Minn.) had a goal and three assists for the Auggies, while Becky Genzler (FY, Farmington, Minn.) and Jesse Heusinkveld (SO, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) had a goal and assist each.
• Lexi Halvorson (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) also scored a goal, and Delaney Everett (SO, Brooklyn Center, Minn./Champlin Park HS) had two assists.
• Augsburg trailed 4-3 at halftime, but scored four goals in a 3:23 span to take a 7-5 lead with 20 minutes left. Augsburg was able to hold the lead the rest of the way.
• The Auggies outshot the Spartans by a 25-22 margin and had 27 ground balls to Dubuque's 13.
• Augsburg went 21-for-29 in its clearing attempts, while Dubuque went 24-for-33.
• Halvorson and Sheala Osborne (FY, West St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had four draw controls each, with Osborne causing four turnovers and Halvorson causing three.
• Christina Nelson (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) had five caused turnovers and four ground balls.
• Marissa Guillou (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) had six saves in goal, while causing six turnovers and recording eight ground balls.


FOR THE FOES
• Robyn Wittkopf scored three goals and added two assists, while Bridget Schirmers scored three goals with an assist.
• Breann Tjaarda had two goals and two assists, while Cassandra Berger had two goals and Kelly Wetherald scored a goal.

• Tjaarda led all players with eight draw controls, while Wittkopf had five draw controls.
• Kaley Weir had nine saves in goal for Dubuque.
