Augsburg baseball opens 2016 season with split

FULTON, Mo. -- The Augsburg College baseball team opened its 2016 season with a doubleheader split at Westminster College (Mo.) on Saturday afternoon at Saucier Field. The Auggies dropped the first game 7-1, but scored a 12-3 win in the second game.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Brandon Schmahl (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) opened the season for the Auggies with a leadoff home run in the top of the first inning, but the Auggies could manage just three more hits the rest of the way in the opening seven-inning game.
• Josh Marlowe (JR, North St. Paul, Minn.) went 2-for-3 at the plate in the first game, with singles in the second and seventh innings. Billy Brookshaw (SR, Prescott, Wis.) had the other Auggie hit, a single in the sixth inning.
• Lincoln Hochmuth (JR, Cannon Falls, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) took the loss on the mound for the Auggies, striking out two while walking three in 3.0 innings of work. Charles Linder (FY, Harris, Minn./North Branch HS) and Steven Piette (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) pitched in relief.
• Westminster scored three runs in the second and sixth innings, adding another run in the third. The Blue Jays had 10 hits in the game.


GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• A seven-run eighth inning, as Augsburg sent 11 batters to the plate, gave the Auggies the big lead. Bryce Pruszinske (SR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) hit a two-run double, Marlowe had a two-run triple, Mike Brookshaw (FY, Prescott, Wis.) and Schmahl hit back-to-back RBI doubles, and Billy Brookshaw hit a run-scoring single in Augsburg's seven-hit inning.
• The Auggies scored twice in the fourth inning, as Marlowe hit a two-run single to plate Piette and Billy Brookshaw.
• Augsburg scored three runs in the seventh inning, as Schmahl hit a run-scoring single and John Dittman (FY, Farmington, Minn.) hit a two-run single.

• Marlowe, Schmahl, Billy Brookshaw, Piette and Eric Olheiser (JR, Maplewood, Minn./Tartan HS) had two hits each for the Auggies.
• Luke Chinn (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) started and struck out four while not walking a batter in six innings of work to earn the pitching win. Jamie Kaye (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Piette pitched in relief.

FOR THE FOES
• Adam Mundle and Nick Cessna had four hits each for the Blue Jays in the doubleheader, each claiming two hits in each game.
• Deion Hughes pitched a four-hit, complete-game victory in the first game, striking out six while walking two.
• Mundle and Cessna hit doubles in the first game for the Blue Jays. Tyler Branneky drove in two runs.
• Connor Hager and Branneky hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning of the second game. Cessna had two doubles in the second contest.

• The teams will compete the series with a single, nine-inning game on Sunday (2/28) at 1 p.m. at Westminster.
