Kaufer's 43 saves lead Auggies to playoff-clinching win

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Jordyn Kaufer (SO, Stillwater, Minn.) collected a season-best 43 saves to record his second shutout in goal this season and third of his career, leading the Augsburg College men's hockey team to a 2-0 win over Hamline University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday evening at Oscar Johnson Arena. With the win, Augsburg clinched a berth in the five-team MIAC postseason playoffs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Improving to 13-4-0 on the season, Kaufer stopped all 43 shots he faced in the victory. He has won five straight games in goal for the Auggies, surrendering just six goals in the span.
Trevor Stewart (JR, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Eastmont HS) opened the scoring for the Auggies with a shorthanded goal at the 8:05 mark of the second period, assisted by Mack Ohnsted (SR, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS).
Corbin Chapman (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) gave the Auggies a 2-0 lead with a power-play goal at the 13:20 mark of the second period, assisted by Rory Vesel (JR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS).
• Hamline outshot Augsburg by a 43-27 margin, including a 30-16 margin over the first two periods.
• Chapman had four shots on-goal in the game, while Ohnsted, Stewart, Evan Hesse (SO, Monticello, Minn./Palmer (Alaska) HS) and Eric Brenk (FY, Moorhead, Minn.) had three shots each.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• With 31 points in the MIAC standings, first-place Augsburg maintained its four-point lead over St. Thomas (27 points). The teams meet in an MIAC series next weekend.
• Augsburg clinched a berth in the five-team MIAC postseason playoffs with the victory, its 15th berth in the conference playoffs and sixth in the last 10 years.
• Kaufer now leads MIAC goalies in overall statistics in goals-against-average (2.05), save percentage (.926) and winning percentage (.765). His 13 wins are now tied for the lead among all 
NCAA Division III goalies nationally.
• Hamline was unable to score on four power-play opportunities. Augsburg has now not surrendered a power-play goal in nine straight games. The Auggies have killed 36 straight penalties, dating to its 5-2 win over Bethel on Jan. 8.
• Augsburg's has allowed just seven goals in 72 power-play opportunities this season, with its 90.3 penalty-kill percentage tops among MIAC teams and fifth-best among NCAA Division III teams nationally. Augsburg's combined special teams percentage of 59.8 (14-of-60 power play, 65-of-72 penalty kill) is second-best among NCAA Division III teams nationally.


FOR THE FOES
• Brandon Zurn had seven shots on-goal for Hamline, while Mitch Hall, Mitch McPherson, Charlie Adams and Jaycob McCombs had four shots each.
• Justin Quale had 25 saves in goal for the Pipers.
