Olmscheid's double-double paces Auggies in OT win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Claiming his third double-double of the season with a career-high 31 points and 10 rebounds, Collin Olmscheid (SO, Buffalo, Minn.) led the Augsburg College men's basketball team in a 74-68, overtime victory over Bethel University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday evening at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Tied 58-58 after regulation, Augsburg scored the first seven points of overtime -- two field goals by Joe Zangel (SR, Richfield, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) and a three-pointer by Brett Rasmussen (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) -- to take a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way. Bethel cut the lead to three points in the final minute, but the Auggies connected on 7-of-8 free throws in the final 49 seconds to secure the victory.
• Rasmussen scored five points in overtime, while Zangel and Richie Perea (JR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Wasson HS) scored four points each and Harry Sonie (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) scored three points.
• Olmscheid scored in double figures for the 19th time this season, connecting on a career-high 31 points with 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals. He connected on 13-of-19 from the field, including 3-of-8 from three-point range.
• Zangel scored 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field, adding eight rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.
• Rasmussen scored 16 points with seven rebounds and two assists.
• Perea had a team-best seven assists and two steals.
• Augsburg used a 10-2 run over a 4:24 span to take its largest lead of the game, 29-16 with 7:05 left in the first half. The Auggies led 35-27 at halftime. But the Royals used a 14-6 run to tie the game at 41-41 over the first 6:28 of the second half. Augsburg pulled ahead again, leading 54-47 with 4:35 left in regulation, but the Royals used an 11-4 run to tie the game, forcing overtime.
• Augsburg shot 49.1 percent (27-of-55) from the field in the game, while Bethel shot 44.4 percent (28-of-63). Augsburg outrebounded Bethel by a 34-30 margin.
• Augsburg scored 22 points off of 15 Bethel turnovers, while Bethel scored 11 points off of 14 Augsburg miscues.


BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• In pursuit of a spot in the six-team MIAC postseason playoffs, Augsburg (8-8 MIAC) is just a game behind both Carleton and Bethel, tied for fifth place with 9-7 conference records. Augsburg has four games remaining in the regular season.
• Rasmussen has scored in double figures in 19 games this season, including a current streak of 13 straight games.
• Zangel has scored in double figures in 11 games this season.
• It's the seventh game that Perea has recorded five or more assists this season.
