NAPLES, Fla.-- The Augsburg College softball team started its spring break trip in Florida with two games in the Gene Cusic Classic on Friday. The Auggies will take on 10 teams over the course of five days. UW-SUPERIOR• The Auggies were held to one run on three hits in their first game in Florida.
• Carly Dropik (FY, Alexandria, Minn.),
Amanda Niznik (JR, Columbia Heights, Minn.) and
Jenna Orth (SR, Melrose, Minn.) each recorded a hit, but the Auggies struck out 10 times and stranded four runners.
• Sarah Buckner (SR, Duluth, Minn./East HS) recorded the lone RBI for the Auggies in the first inning after Dropik was hit by a pitch, then stole second and third before Buckner grounded out to third to score Dropik.
• Courtney Larsen (SO, Little Canada, Minn./Concordia Academy HS) threw all seven innings for Augsburg, scattering seven hits and allowing three runs (two earned).
• Both teams scored in the opening frame before the pitchers locked in for a duel, with the Yellowjackets plating two more runs in the sixth to seal the win. HIGHLIGHTS VS. EDGEWOOD• The second game of the day proved to be much better for the Auggie bats, as they scored three runs in the third, two in the fourth and two more in the seventh to earn the 7-3 victory.
• Carrisa Struve (SO, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) was the starting pitcher for the Auggies and threw three shutout innings, allowing just three hits.
• The winning pitcher of record was
Samantha Anderson (FY, Coon Rapids, Minn.), who relieved Struve, throwing four innings and striking out seven. Anderson helped her own cause with two hits, an RBI, a walk and a run.
• Dropik led the Auggies at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, while
Brianna Cline (SO, St. Clair, Minn.) recorded a multiple hit game of her own, going 2-for-4.
• Niznik and Orth finished 1-for-4 and 1-for-3 respectively, while
Anna Podewils (FY, Burnsville, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) scored two runs and
Taylor Mattice (SO, Woodbury, Minn./Centennial HS) added an RBI.
• The Auggies finished with nine hits, compared to Edgewood's seven.
• Augsburg struck out just three times, while Edgewood struck out seven times. UP NEXT•
Augsburg will return to action Saturday (3/12) for two more games in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic as they face-off against Salem State University and Kenyon College.
