Augsburg opens Tucson Invitational with win

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Augsburg College baseball team opened its 10-game run at the Tucson Invitational with a 12-9 victory over Aurora University (Ill.) on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The teams combined for 21 runs and 23 hits in the game, with Augsburg pounding out 11 hits, including a double by Eric Olheiser (JR, Maplewood, Minn./Tartan HS) and a triple by Mike Brookshaw (FY, Prescott, Wis.).
• Augsburg sent nine batters to the plate and scored five runs in the first inning. Josh Marlowe (JR, North St. Paul, Minn.) and Olheiser had run-scoring singles, and Brookshaw hit a three-run triple.
• After Aurora took the lead with a seven-run third inning, Augsburg regained the lead with a five-run fifth, again sending nine batters to the plate. Jack Duffy (JR, Fridley, Minn./De La Salle HS) brought home a run on an error, and Brandon Schmahl (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) and Marlowe each hit two-run singles.
• The Auggies scored another run in the sixth, as Rhett Hebig (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) plated Olheiser on a single, and another in the seventh, as Jordan DeCroock (SO, Farmington, Minn.) scored a run on a passed ball.
• Lincoln Hochmuth (JR, Cannon Falls, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) picked up the pitching win, striking out one in 5.0 innings of work. Charles Linder (FY, Harris, Minn./North Branch HS) and Steven Piette (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) pitched in relief, with Piette picking up the save, striking out two in the final two innings.
• Schmahl, Marlowe, Olheiser and Hebig had two hits each to lead the Auggies.


FOR THE FOES
• Nick Turner went 3-for-5 for Aurora, scoring two runs and driving in another, while Jeffrey Mayes, Adam Lipscomb and Nicholas Mathey had two hits each, with Lipscomb and Mathey each driving in two runs. Mayes hit a triple and Cale Sparks hit a double for Aurora.
• Aurora had four pitchers in the game, with Tyler Findlay taking the loss in relief.

• Augsburg faces La Verne (Calif.) in a doubleheader on Sunday (3/13) in Tucson.
