Auggies drop 10-3 decision at D-I Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS -- Jack Duffy (JR, Fridley, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) hit a pinch-hit, solo home run in the eighth inning for Augsburg College, but the Auggies dropped a 10-3 decision to the University of Minnesota in a nonconference baseball contest on Tuesday afternoon at Siebert Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Duffy's home run was one of four hits for the Division III Auggies in the contest against the Division I Gophers.
• The Auggies scored their first run of the game in the sixth inning, as Billy Brookshaw (SR, Prescott, Wis.) struck out but reached base on a passed ball, moved to second on a walk, stole third base and came across following a fielding error.
• In the seventh, Rhett Hebig (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) hit a single and eventually came around to score following a double play grounder. Hebig also had a single in the fifth inning.
• Augsburg used six pitchers in the game, with starter Luke Chinn (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) striking out two batters in the first inning. In all, Augsburg used 24 players in the game.


FOR THE FOES
• Connor Schaefbauer drove in four runs in his 2-for-2 performance at the plate, bringing home two runs on a single in the first inning, another run on a double in the third and a fourth run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
• Terrin Vavra drove in two runs, hitting an RBi single in the third inning and an RBI fielder's choice in the fifth.
• Dan Motl, Matt Fiedler, Micah Coffey and Cole McDevitt also had two hits each for the Gophers.
• The Gophers used five pitchers in the game.


UP NEXT
• Augsburg travels to face Central (Iowa) for a nonconference doubleheader. The games have been moved up to Friday (3/25) at 12 p.m., due to the threat of wintry weather in central Iowa for the weekend.
