Auggies score nonconference sweep at Central

PELLA, Iowa -- Three Augsburg College pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts while allowing just two runs in the doubleheader, as the Auggies claimed a sweep of host Central College in nonconference baseball action on Friday. Augsburg won 8-0 and 8-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Lincoln Hochmuth (JR, Cannon Falls, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS), Jordan Brandt (JR, Eagan, Minn.) and Steven Piette (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) pitched in the doubleheader for the Auggies. Hochmuth struck out seven in six shutout innings in the seven-inning opener, while Brandt struck out seven in seven innings in the nine-inning finale. Piette pitched three innnings of hitless relief in the twinbill, striking out three while not walking any of the 10 batters he faced.
• Nine different Auggies had hits in the doubleheader, led by Josh Marlowe (JR, North St. Paul, Minn.) and Bryce Pruszinske (SR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS), who had four hits each. Marlowe went 4-for-7 with three runs scored, a double and an RBI, while Pruszinske went 4-for-8 with an RBI.
• Jordan DeCroock (SO, Farmington, Minn.) and John Dittman (FY, Farmington, Minn.) had three hits each, with DeCroock scoring a run and driving in three, and Dittman hitting a double, scoring two runs and driving in two.
• Augsburg has now outscored its opponents by a 143-99 margin through its first 16 games. Augsburg has scored six or more runs in 10 of its 16 games (9-1 record in those games).

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Scoreless through four innings, the Auggies scored six runs in the fifth inning to break open the game. Augsburg batted around in the frame, getting three hits and taking advantage of three Central errors. Brandon Schmahl (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) had a run-scoring double, Pruszinske drove in a run on a single, Eric Olheiser (JR, Maplewood, Minn./Tartan HS) plated a run on an error and Andy Julkowski (SR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) hit a sacrifice fly.
• DeCroock drove in a run on suicide squeeze bunt single in the sixth inning. Later in the frame, DeCroock and Dittman, who had hit a double before DeCroock's bunt, pulled off a double steal, with DeCroock successfully stealing home.
• Hochmuth struck out seven while walking three and allowing just three hits in his six innings of work, with Piette striking out two of the three batters he faced in the seventh.


GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Trailing 2-1 after six innings, Augsburg scored two runs in the seventh, four runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to claim the victory.
• Augsburg claimed another steal of home in the opening inning, as Marlowe got the successful steal with two outs to put the Auggies in front.
• DeCroock drove in two runs on a single in the seventh inning to give the Auggies a 3-2 lead.
• In the eighth, Julkowski hit a run-scoring single, Marlowe scored on a passed ball, and Dittman hit a two-run single.
• A final run came across in the ninth, as Marlowe plated Schmahl on a single.
• Brandt struck out seven while walking two and allowing three hits and two runs in seven innings, with Piette recording a strikeout in two innings of relief, facing just seven batters.


FOR THE FOES
• Garrett Saunders had two hits and scored a run in the doubleheader for Central, which was limited to three hits in each game. Jacob Hirst scored the other run for the Dutch.
• Matt Schissel struck out five while allowing eight hits in seven innings of pitching in the second game. He was one of six pitchers the Dutch used in the doubleheader.
