Auggies score doubleheader split at Northwestern

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg College baseball team split a nonconference doubleheader at the University of Northwestern-St. Paul on Wednesday evening, losing the first game 8-7 and winning the second game 5-4.

THE BASICS
SCORES: Northwestern-St. Paul 8, Augsburg 7; Augsburg 5, Northwestern-St. Paul 4
LOCATION: Reynolds Field, St. Paul, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 10-8 overall, Northwestern 6-12 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Brandon Schmahl (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) went 5-for-8 in the doubleheader, going 2-for-4 with a double and run scored in the first game, while going 3-for-4 with a triple and a run scored in the second game.
• Andy Julkowski (SR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) had three hits, including two doubles, in the doubleheader, scoring two runs.
• Augsburg used seven pitchers in the doubleheader -- three in the first game and four in the second game.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg scored four runs in the first inning, as Josh Marlowe (JR, North St. Paul, Minn.) hit a two-run double and Bryce Pruszinske (SR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) hit a two-run home run.
• Northwestern scored two runs in the first inning and two runs in the third inning to tie the game.
• Augsburg took the lead back in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs. Rhett Hebig (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) hit a two-run double and Schmahl hit a run-scoring single. But the Eagles plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead back.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg scored twice in the second inning, as Julkowski hit a double and came around to score on a two-run homer by Jack Duffy (JR, Fridley, Minn./DeLaSalle HS).
• Two more runs came across in the fourth, as Julkowski hit a run-scoring double and Eric Olheiser (JR, Maplewood, Minn./Tartan HS) hit a sacrifice fly.
• The Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Augsburg took the lead back in the fifth, as Schmahl tripled and came home on an RBI groundout by BIlly Brookshaw (SR, Prescott, Wis.).

FOR THE FOES
• Ryan Sutterer hit a two-run homer and Tyler Osborn hit a three-run homer for the Eagles in the first game.
• Sutterer hit another homer in the second game, while Brady Arneson hit an RBI triple. 

UP NEXT
• Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday (4/2) at 1 p.m., with a doubleheader at Bethel.
• Northwestern opens Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader at Crown on Saturday at 1 p.m.
