Big innings lead Auggies to sweep of Royals

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- A series of big innings in both games led the Augsburg College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of host Bethel University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference twinbill on Sunday afternoon, as the Auggies won 14-2 and 18-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• As a team, Augsburg pounded out 31 hits -- including six doubles and five home runs -- in the doubleheader, scoring 32 runs. The Auggies also had 10 walks and a hit batter, while taking advantage of nine Bethel errors. Eight of the 32 runs allowed by Bethel were unearned.
• Josh Marlowe (JR, North St. Paul, Minn.) and Brandon Schmahl (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) continued their hot hitting ways, as both had six hits in the doubleheader. Marlowe had a double, home run, seven RBI and five runs scored, and Schmahl scored four runs, drove in six and hit a homer.
• Mike Brookshaw (FY, Prescott, Wis.) and Bryce Pruszinske (SR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) had four hits each, with Brookshaw hitting a double and home run, driving in four runs while scoring four runs, and Pruszinske hitting a homer and scoring three runs while driving in five.
• Augsburg used just three pitchers in the doubleheader.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Scoreless through the first three innings, Augsburg scored all its runs in the final four frames of the seven-inning first contest, including a six-run seventh inning.
• Andy Julkowski (SR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) hit a leadoff double and came home on a two-run homer by Brookshaw in the fourth inning, and Pruszinske hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning.
• Marlowe hit a two-run double and Pruszinske hit a run-scoring single in the sixth inning.
• Augsburg sent 12 batters to the plate in the seventh inning, scoring six runs. Jordan DeCroock (SO, Farmington, Minn.) hit a two-run double, Billy Brookshaw (SR, Prescott, Wis.) hit a run-scoring single, Marlowe hit a two-run homer and Mike Brookshaw hit an RBI single to cap the Auggie scoring.
• Lincoln Hochmuth (JR, Cannon Falls, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) pitched the first six innings for the Auggies, striking out three while walking one. Ryan Masui (FY, Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka HS) pitched a scoreless seventh to complete the victory.


GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Trailing 5-4 after five innings, Augsburg blew the game open with a 13-run sixth inning, sending 15 batters to the plate. All 13 runs scored with nobody out in the inning. DeCroock and Schmahl hit run-scoring singles, Marlowe hit a two-run single, Pruszinske hit an RBI single, Julkowski hit a three-run homer, Mike Brookshaw drove in a run on a single and Schmahl hit a grand-slam home run.
• The Auggies scored three runs in the first inning, as Marlowe hit an RBI single, Julkowski drove in a run following an error and Eric Olheiser (JR, Maplewood, Minn./Tartan HS) drove in a run on a groundout.
• Rhett Hebig (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) doubled and scored on an RBI groundout by Schmahl in the fourth, and Olheiser scored on a groundout by Hebig in the seventh.
• Jordan Brandt (JR, Eagan, Minn.) pitched a complete-game victory for the Auggies in the second game, shortnened to seven innings via the 10-run rule. He allowed just one walk and eight hits.


FOR THE FOES
• Matt Conrad adn Sam Horner had two hits each for the Royals in the first game, with Conrad hitting a double and home run, driving in both Bethel runs. Horner hit a triple.
• Bret Neuville went 3-for-3 in the second game with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Jared Watts had two hits in the second game.
