Auggies fall to No. 19-ranked Tommies

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg College baseball team dropped a doubleheader to the No. 19-ranked University of St. Thomas in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday at Koch Diamond.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg scored both its runs in the third inning. Brandon Schmahl (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) hit a one-out infield single, advanced to third when Billy Brookshaw (SR, Prescott, Wis.) reached base on an error, then scored after Josh Marlowe (JR, North St. Paul, Minn.) reached base on an error. A sacrifice fly by Bryce Pruszinske (SR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) plated Brookshaw.
• Augsburg was limited to three hits in the first game. Pruszinske and Mike Brookshaw (FY, Prescott, Wis.) had singles in the second inning.
• St. Thomas scored single runs in the first, second and fifth innings.
• Luke Chinn (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) struck out three while walking two in 5.1 innings for the Auggies, with Steven Piette (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) struck out one of the two batters he faced in the sixth inning.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Behind two 2-run homers and a sacrifice fly, St. Thomas took a 5-0 lead in the first inning. The Tommies added three runs in the fifth inning and single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth to score the second-game win.
• Schmahl doubled, moved to third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch for the Auggies in the fourth inning, and Eric Olheiser (JR, Maplewood, Minn./Tartan HS) hit a solo home run in the fifth inning. A bases-loaded walk plated Rhett Hebig (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) in the eighth.
• Olheiser had two hits for the Auggies in the second game.
• Augsburg used four pitchers in the game, with Jamie Kaye (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) striking out four in 4.1 innings of relief.

FOR THE FOES
• Jimmy Dolan and Zach Gotfredsen had two hits each for the Tommies in the first game.
• Mitch Larson had six strikeouts against one walk in a complete-game victory for St. Thomas in the opener.
• Jake Smith went 3-for-5 with a home run in the second game, driving in two runs and scoring three. Chad Clute had a double and home run, driving in four runs.
