Errors prove costly in Auggie losses to Pipers

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College baseball team received two good starts from its pitching staff, but six errors led to six unearned runs in a pair of losses to Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Parade Stadium. The Pipers won 5-1 and 11-4.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Four Augsburg errors led to three unearned runs in the first game, spoiling a solid start from Augsburg's Luke Chinn (SR, Burnsville, Minn.). Chinn threw 6.1 innings, striking out three while walking one and allowing seven hits. Steven Piette (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) relieved him in the seventh and retired the final two Pipers in order.
• Augsburg scored its lone run in the third inning, when Mike Brookshaw (FY, Prescott, Wis.) hit a leadoff double and scored on a single by Andy Julkowski (SR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS).
• Hamline scored single runs in the second and fifth inning, then scored two unearned runs in the seventh inning, taking advantage of two Auggie errors.
Josh Marlowe (JR, North St. Paul, Minn.) also had a double for the Auggies in the first game.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Hamline scored three unearned runs in the third inning, then scored four runs in the sixth inning and four runs in the final two innings to claim the win and the sweep. Augsburg scored a single run in the third inning and three runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Jordan Brandt (JR, Eagan, Minn.) started and pitched five innings, striking out six while walking four. Four of the seven runs charged to him were earned. Lincoln Hochmuth (JR, Cannon Falls, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) pitched 2.2 innings with two strikeouts, and Piette pitched 1.1 innings with one strikeout.
• Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (JR, Prior Lake, Minn.) hit an infield single in the third inning and scored on a single by Mike Brookshaw.
• Augsburg scored three runs in the ninth, as a Rhett Hebig (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) double plated Eric Olheiser (JR, Maplewood, Minn./Tartan HS), a Buescher groundout plated Billy Brookshaw (SR, Prescott, Wis.), and a Brandon Schmahl (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) single plated Hebig.
Mike Brookshaw, Billy Brookshaw, Buescher and Bryce Pruszinske (SR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) had two hits each for the Auggies.

FOR THE FOES
• Collin Olstad hit three doubles and drove in three runs in the doubleheader, going 4-for-9 at the plate with a run scored.
• Tyler Summers went 4-for-8 in the twinbill with three runs scored, a double and an RBI.
• Alex Bauermeister pitched a complete-game win for the Pipers in the first game, striking out seven.
