Auggies pound out 26 hits in sweep at Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Pounding out 26 hits in the doubleheader, the Augsburg College baseball team scored a sweep at Carleton College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday. Augsburg won 2-1 and 13-2 (7 innings).

DOUBLEHEADER HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg collected nine hits in the first game and 17 hits in the second game, ended after seven innings due to the 10-run rule. The Auggies had nine doubles and one triple among their 26 hits.
• Mike Brookshaw (FY, Prescott, Wis.) went 6-for-8 in the doubleheader with a double, five RBI and two runs scored, including a 5-for-5, four-RBI performance in the second game.
• Andy Julkowski (SR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) went 4-for-6 with two doubles, a run scored and three RBI.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg took the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Bryce Pruszinske (SR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) hit a one-out single, and pinch runner Johnny Dittman (FY, Farmington, Minn.) came around to score on a Julkowski RBI double.
• Jamie Kaye (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) started on the mound for the Auggies, striking out three while walking two in 5.2 innings. Steven Piette (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) struck out two of the four batters he faced in the final 1.1 innings of relief to score the win.
• Augsburg tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning, Billy Brookshaw (SR, Prescott, Wis.) led off the inning with a single, moved to third on a double by Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (JR, Prior Lake, Minn.), then scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Brookshaw.
• Pruszinske and Julkowski had two hits each for the Auggies.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two innings, including a six-run opening frame. Augsburg then scored twice in the third inning, once in the fifth and once in the seventh, ending the scheduled nine-inning game early.
• Jacob Kari (SO, North Branch, Minn.) pitched a complete-game victory for the Auggies, striking out five while walking two and allowing just six hits.
• Augsburg sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored six runs. Back-to-back doubles by Brandon Schmahl (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) and Mike Brookshaw plated a run, Eric Olheiser (JR, Maplewood, Minn./Tartan HS) drove in two runs on a double, Rhett Hebig (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) drove in two runs on a single, and Billy Brookshaw hit a run-scoring double.
• Three runs came across in the second, as Josh Marlowe (JR, North St. Paul, Minn.) hit an RBI double and Julkowski hit a two-run single. Mike Brookshaw hit a run-scoring single in the third inning, with another run coming across on a double play.
• Mike Brookshaw hit RBI singles in the fifth and seventh innings to round out the Auggie scoring.

FOR THE FOES
• Griffin Bolte went 5-for-8 at the plate with two triples and an RBI for Carleton in the doubleheader.
• Brendon Fischel hit two doubles and Willie Freimuth hit a solo home run.

• Augsburg closes its 2016 season on Saturday (5/7) at 1 p.m., hosting St. Olaf at Parade Stadium.
