Vang's goal lifts Auggies to first win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Lionel Vang (FY, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) scored on a blast from 30 yards out in the 74th minute, the lone goal Augsburg College would need in gaining its first win of the season, a 1-0 victory over the University of Minnesota-Morris on Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Vang scored his second collegiate goal with 16:55 left in the contest, driving the ball into the goal from right to left from 30 yards out. Ebesa Hamid (SO, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia/Addis International Academy) received the assist for his first point as an Auggie.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "This was our most complete performance to date on the ball, and I think a lot of that came from the confidence in our defending. It allowed us to take more risks, and we are just starting to get a little more mobile in the final third. We connected for a ton of possession, and it was meaningful."
• "I thought Jason Scheeler (JR, Blaine, Minn.) and Barinedum Kordah (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) stood out tonight; they were both exceptional for so many reasons. 'Barney' chose the right moments to get forward, and stayed concentrated in defense. Scheeler was so busy and so sharp on the ball, and he finally stretched his legs a bit getting forward.
• "Lionel finally capitalized, taking advantage of their goalkeeper's positioning. He kept higher than he should, and Vang finally lobbed a little ball over him. It probably should have been more, but we weren't quite up to the final moment. That's something we will continue to sharpen as we get better in our attack."
• "I also thought Taylor Sullivan (FY, Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) provided valuable minutes off the bench. He was up to the challenge, and I was very impressed with him. He worked his tail off and showed why he's growing as quickly as he is."
• "The preseason was a valuable time for us. Too short, definitely, but it served its purpose as we move forward with the rigors of the MIAC."

UP NEXT
• Augsburg opens MIAC play on Wednesday (9/14) at 7:30 p.m., hosting Saint Mary's at Edor Nelson Field.
