Augsburg falls 35-13 at Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. -- In what ended up being a tale of two distinctly different halves, Gustavus Adolphus College claimed a 35-13 victory over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS

RECORDS: Augsburg 0-3 overall (0-1 MIAC), Gustavus 3-0 overall (1-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg dominated the first half, outgaining Gustavus by a 174-79 margin while building a 13-0 advantage. But Gustavus limited Augsburg to just 20 yards off offense in the second half and scored five straight touchdowns to claim the home victory. The Gusties ended up outgaining the Auggies by a 399-194 margin in the game.
• Augsburg kicker Tyler Hanson (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) connected on two career-long field goals -- a 42-yarder midway through the first quarter and a 45-yarder with 17 seconds left in the second quarter.
• The Auggies' touchdown came on a 35-yard rush by Tiras Bolton (JR, Omaha, Neb./Omaha Westside HS) with 5:34 left in the second quarter. Bolton ended up rushing nine times for 45 yards in the game, while catching five passes for 32 yards.
• Augsburg used two quarterbacks in the game. Sam Keis (SR, Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels HS), making his first start as an Auggie, completed 20-of-34 passes for 146 yards. Shannon Storley (SO, Waconia, Minn.) came in the game late in the third quarter and played on two Auggie drives, completing 2-of-5 passes for 15 yards.
• Nick Heenie (SO, Victoria, Minn./Waconia HS) caught 12 passes for 100 yards -- nine catches for 79 yards in the first half -- for his first collegiate 100-yard receiving game.
• Defensively, Derek Glynn (FY, Faribault, Minn.) led the Auggies with 11 tackles (three solo). Khoa Nguyen (SR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) had 10 tackles (two solo) and an interception that set up Hanson's second field goal just before halftime.
• Lorenzo Hernandez (SO, New Ulm, Minn.) had nine tackles, Matt Bowlin (SR, Chanhassen, Minn./Holy Angels HS) had eight tackles (three solo) and a pass breakup, Clayton Byrd (JR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) had eight tackles (two solo) and Barclay Bates (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) had eight tackles (two solo).
• Punter Glenn Meyers (JR, Blaine, Minn.) had seven punts for 263 yards, a 37.6 yards-per-punt average.

FOR THE FOES
• Christian Haffner completed 9-of-11 passes for 112 yards and three second-half touchdowns for Gustavus -- a 10-yarder to Hunter Johnson, a six-yarder to Jamison Beulke and a 30-yarder to Johnson.
• Karim Ortiz rushed 27 times for 180 yards -- 16 times for 138 yards in the second half -- and two touchdowns, a 43-yarder early in the third quarter and a six-yarder early in the fourth quarter.
• Leeland Lauti had eight tackles (two solo) for Gustavus, while Tanner Jensen had six tackles (four solo) and two pass breakups.

• Augsburg hosts Carleton in the Auggies' Homecoming game next Saturday (9/24) at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
