Auggies shut out by Knights

MINNEAPOLIS -- Scoring twice in the first half and twice in the second half, Wartburg College claimed a 4-0 win over host Augsburg College in a nonconference men's soccer contest on Tuesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Wartburg (Iowa) 4, Augsburg 0
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 0-3-0 overall, Wartburg 2-1-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg had a solid chance to score early, but a shot by B.K. Kormah (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) went just high over the net in the 14th minute. Three minutes later, Wartburg scored its first goal of the game on a free kick.
• Early in the second half, Augsburg had another tremendous chance during a set of three corner kicks in succession. Barinedum Kordah (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) had a header in front, but a Wartburg defender was able to deflect the ball away.
• Wartburg outshot Augsburg by a 13-11 margin in the game, while Augsburg had seven corner kicks to Wartburg's three.
• Ben Henry (SR, Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln HS) had three shots in the game, while Kordah had two shots.
• Garrett Kaelin (FY, River Falls, Wis./Hill-Murray HS) had five saves in goal for Augsburg.

FOR THE FOES
• Nick Schwake opened the scoring for the Knights with a free kick goal from 20 yards out in the 18th minute. Kimu Kasha scored on a slice in front from Daniel Luzindyha in the 33rd minute.
• Devin Eby scored in the 66th minute, intercepting an Augsburg clearing attempt off a Wartburg corner kick. Paris Martins capped the scoring in the 88th minute, heading home a long diagonal service by Andrew Bell.
• Gunnar Lenzen had six saves in goal for Wartburg.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "I thought the first 15 minutes or so were really sharp. We were on the ball, we got in on the left flank through BK and hit the crossbar before conceding a silly foul in a bad spot. They took it well, and the runners froze Garrett - he really didn't have a chance on it as it wrapped in against the back post.  That goal changed us for some reason, and Wartburg was smart to drop in and let us go side-to-side. We were missing that run from a deeper player to imbalance their lines and just couldn't seem to figure out a way to get behind them. They scored a good second goal before the half and that forced our hand."
• "We were more assertive in the second half and could have bagged a few goals. They cleared one off the line after Barinedum headed it past the goalkeeper. We had to take risks and in the end, that led to the other goals. I thought Ebesa and BK were sharp all night and Malley put in a great shift. He's got the tools to be a menace up top, and hopefully he can remain consistent and dangerous."
• "It's a painful scoreline, but we can spin it by saying that we had a few poor moments that cost us goals. In the end, it's a learning opportunity. If we take it that way, we will only grow stronger. Our last test is Saturday before the games that matter start next Wednesday. We need to sharpen up in a few areas and sort out small details - and then we will be where we should be."
