Olmscheid reaches milestone in Auggie OT win

WINONA, Minn. -- Collin Olmscheid (JR, Buffalo, Minn.) became the 21st player in Augsburg College men's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point career scoring plateau, as his Auggies scored a 111-106 overtime victory over Saint Mary's University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Olmscheid scored a career-high 34 points on 11-of-22 shooting from the floor and 11-of-13 from the free-throw line, while also pulling down a game-high nine rebounds. He scored a team-high seven points in overtime. Olmscheid now has scored exactly 1,000 career points in 63 games over his first two-and-a-half seasons as an Auggie, averaging 15.9 points per-game in his career.
• Augsburg overcame a four-point deficit in the final eight seconds of regulation to force overtime, then outscored Saint Mary's 27-22 in the extra session to pick up the win.

• A pair of Saint Mary's free throws put the Cardinals up 84-80 with just eight seconds to play, but the Auggies weren't done yet, as Kevin McKiernan (SO, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) hit a layup and was fouled with five seconds left, pulling the score to 84-82. McKiernan intentionally missed the free throw, Richie Perea (SR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Wasson HS) grabbed the offensive board and was fouled. Perea converted on both free throws to force overtime, where Augsburg outscored the Cardinals 27-22, including converting on 12-of-14 from the free-throw line.
• McKiernan continued his hot shooting streak, scoring 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe.
• Marking his fourth consecutive game scoring in double figures, Perea put up 17 points and tied a season-high with seven rebounds. Perea was perfect from the free-throw line, converting 9-of-9, while dishing out three assists. 
• Also finishing in double figures for the Auggies were Chuckie Smith (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) and Henry Mulligan (FY, Iowa City, Iowa), who finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.

• For the game, Augsburg shot 54.0 percent (34-of-63) from the floor, while the Cardinals hit 50.0 percent (35-of-70) of their shot attempts. Augsburg has now shot 54 percent or better in three of their last four games.
• Saint Mary's claimed a 38-36 advantage on the boards, but the Auggies were able to outscore the Cardinals 41-22 in bench scoring.
• The major difference in the game came down to the free-throw line, Augsburg shot a season-high 48 free throws, converting on 38, while Saint Mary's hit 27-of-32 from thee free throw line.


FOR THE FOES
• The Cardinals finished with four players in double figures, led by Quashingm Smith-Pugh, who scored 30 points on 10-of-14 shooting, while adding eight rebounds and two steals.
• Wylie Ferron and Aaron Romportl scored 24 and 18 points respectively for St. Mary's.

• Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (1/14), when the Auggies play the second half of the doubleheader. Women are schedule to tip-off at 1 p.m. while the men begin action at 3 p.m.
