Auggie comeback falls just short in 70-68 loss to St. Olaf

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team used an 18-4 run to start the second-half and played point-for-point the rest of the way out, but came up just short falling 70-68 to St. Olaf College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: St. Olaf 70, Augsburg 68
LOCATION: Si Melby Hall, Minneapolis, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 6-7 overall (4-4 MIAC), St. Olaf 6-7 overall (4-4 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saturday's script sounded strangely familiar to Wednesday's OT thrilling win over St. Mary's -- down four with eight seconds to play. Richie Perea (SR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Wasson HS) hits a jumper with eight seconds remaining to bring the Auggies within two. Augsburg fouled and St. Olaf missed the free throw. The Auggies got the rebound and brought the ball up the court, getting a three-point attempt, but it didn't fall as Augsburg nearly completed back-to-back thrilling come-from-behind victories.
• Collin Olmscheid (JR, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) led all players with a game-high 20 points, shooting 7-of-10 from the floor, while adding five rebounds and and assist.
• Also finishing in double figures for the Auggies were Chuckie Smith (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) and Nick Varner (JR, Farmington, Minn.), who finished with 11 points apiece. Smith scored all of his points in the second frame and was the key spark in the Auggies run to start the second-half. Varner finished 5-of-7 from the floor and added a rebound, an assist and a steal.
• Perea dished out a team-best seven assists, while adding four points and three rebounds.
• For the game, Augsburg shot 54.2 percent (26-of-48) from the floor, including an impressive 65.2 percent (15-of-23) in the second-half. St. Olaf connected on 50.0 percent (27-of-54) of its shot attempts.
• St. Olaf claimed a 30-21 advantage on the boards, but the Auggies were able to outscore the Oles 16-6 in points off turnovers.

• One of the keys of the game was free throw shooting, Augsburg was only able to connect on 9-of-14, while St. Olaf capitalized on 10-of-12.

FOR THE FOES
• The Oles finished with four players in double figures, led by Nate Albers, who came off the bench to score 15 points, while shooting 5-of-6 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point range.
• Robert Tobroxen led St. Olaf on the boards, pulling down a game-high seven rebounds, while adding nine points and seven assists.
