Auggies claim shootout result in 5-5 tie with Royals

MINNEAPOLIS -- Eric Brenk (SO, Moorhead, Minn.) scored the lone goal in a three-round shootout, and Nick Schmit (SO, Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) stopped all three shots he faced, as the Augsburg College men's hockey team captured the bonus shootout point in a 5-5, overtime tie with Bethel University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Will Peterson (JR, Eagan, Minn.) scored twice early in the second period, including a shorthanded goal on an Augsburg five-minute major penalty, as Augsburg rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to tie the game.
Lukas Gillett (SO, Rosemount, Minn.) scored a power-play goal and Max Pernhem (JR, Stockholm, Sweden/Dragonskolan) scored an even-strength goal for the Auggies late in the second period. Pernhem's goal, at the 19:08 mark of the frame, was the second in a burst of four goals in the final 1:25 of the period, giving the Royals a 5-4 advantage going into the final stanza.
• Augsburg tied the game at 5-5 at the 16:45 mark of the third period, as Jason Krych (FY, Champlin, Minn./Totino-Grace HS), playing in his first collegiate game after joining the Auggies at the semester break, scored his first college goal, a power-play marker on a Bethel major penalty. He added an assist for a two-point night.
• Schmit, who came into the game in relief of Augsburg starting goalie Jordyn Kaufer (SR, Stillwater, Minn.), stopped all nine shots he faced in the third period and overtime to claim the tie, then helped the Auggies gain the bonus MIAC point with three saves in the shootout. Kaufer had 14 saves in the first two periods.
Drew Anderson (JR, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) collected a career-best three assists for the Auggies, with Pernhem, Rory Vesel (SR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS), Andy Faust (JR, Stillwater, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) and Evan Hesse (JR, Monticello, Minn./Palmer (Alaska) HS) adding assists.
• Augsburg outshot Bethel by a 37-28 margin in the game, including a 16-9 advantage in the third period and overtime.

FOR THE FOES
• Peter Barral scored two goals for the Royals, with David Becker, Dallas Marvin and Nick Eytcheson adding goals. Becker added two assists for a three-point night.
• Joe Sheppard had 32 saves in goal for Bethel.

• The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (1/7) at 7 p.m. at the Schwan SuperRink in Blaine, Minn.
