Auggies begin season with win over Northland

MINNEAPOLIS -- Collin Olmscheid (SR, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) led the Augsburg University men's basketball team to a season-opening 72-44 nonconference victory over Northland College on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After a low scoring first half, Augsburg used a key 16-2 run over a 3:56 span midway through the second half to break open the game. Augsburg was able to extend its lead to as many as 31 before coasting to the 72-44 win.
• Olmscheid led all players with 23 points, shooting 9-of-14 from the field, while adding six rebounds, a block and a steal. Olmscheid scored 20+ points in 14 games a year ago, including three of the first four games of the season.
• Nick Sabatke (SR, Eagan, Minn.) tied an Augsburg career-high, finishing with 14 points, shooting 6-for-10 from the field, while adding four rebounds in 25 minutes of action.
• Also posting a career-high mark was Kevin McKiernan (JR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS), who led all players with nine assists, while adding 10 points, five boards and a pair of steals.
• Transfer Booker Coplin (SO, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) led the Auggies on the boards, pulling down seven rebounds, to go along with five points and five assists.
• For the game, Augsburg shot 42.6 percent (26-of-61) from the field, while Northland converted on 32.0 (16-of-50) of its shot attempts.
• The Auggies were efficient on offense, posting 22 assists on 26 made baskets.
• Augsburg claimed a 24-8 advantage in points off turnovers, a 30-22 advantage in points in the pain and a 19-10 advantage in second chance points.

FOR THE FOES
• Northland was led offensively by Thomas Whiting and Harrison Lucas, who posted 13 and 11 points respectively.
• Matt Zorn led all players with a game-high nine rebounds.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (11/18), when the Auggies travel to Morris, Minn. to take on the University of Minnesota Morris Cougars.
• Northland also returns to action on Saturday (11/18) traveling to Bemidji, Minn. to take on the Bemidji State Beavers.
