Auggies drop 66-63 heartbreaker to Carleton in MIAC Quarterfinals

BOXSCORE NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team dropped a 66-63 heartbreaker to Carleton College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff quarterfinal game on Tuesday night at West Gym.

HOW IT HAPPENED
12411• Carleton jumped out to a 23-10 lead to start the game, but the Auggies rallied back over the final nine minutes of the first half and used a Chuckie Smith (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) three-pointer at the buzzer to go into the locker room at the intermission tied at 28-28. The second-half was a tightly contested affair, with neither team able to extend their lead to more than four. Augsburg cut the Carleton lead to 65-63 with four seconds to play on a Nick Sabatke (JR, Eagan, Minn.) layup, but wasn't able to steal the win away from Carleton, which has now won 14 straight games.
• Augsburg was led offensively by Collin Olmscheid (JR, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS), who scored a game-high 18 points, while adding a team-best seven rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.
• In his final game in an Auggie uniform, Richie Perea (SR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Wasson HS) finished 3-for-4 from three-point range and 7-of-14 from the field. Perea scored 17 points, while adding four rebounds, three assists and two steals, playing all 40 minutes of action. 
• Also finishing in double figures for Augsburg was Smith, who posted 10 points, while adding three rebounds.
• Harry Sonie (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) pulled down six rebounds, while adding five points and two assists.
• For the game, Augsburg shot 36.1 percent (22-of-61) from the field, while Carleton converted on 40.7 (22-of-54) of its shot attempts. The Auggies shot an impressive 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from three-point range but struggled at the free throw line. Augsburg was only able to connect on 9-of-15 from the charity stripe, while Carleton hit 19-of-24.
• Augsburg claimed a 16-2 advantage in points off turnovers, but Carleton posted a 30-12 advantage in points in the paint.

FOR THE FOES
• Carleton finished with three players in double figures, led by Kevin Grow who posted a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double.
• The Knights claimed a 38-36 advantage on the boards.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The Auggies have qualified for the MIAC postseason playoffs in seven of the last nine seasons.
