MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College baseball team opened its 2017 season with a pair of losses in its season-opening doubleheader against the University of Jamestown (N.D.) on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium.
THE BASICS
SCORES: Jamestown (N.D.) 1, Augsburg 0; Jamestown (N.D.) 10, Augsburg 2
LOCATION: U.S. Bank Stadium, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 0-2 overall, Jamestown 10-1 overall
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
•
Lincoln Hochmuth (SR, Cannon Falls, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) pitched a complete-game three-hitter for the Auggies, but surrendered the lone run of the game in the first inning after the first two batters reached base being hit by pitches. A sacrifice bunt moved the batters up a base, and a groundout drove in the run. After that, Hochmuch settled in and was effective, striking out one while walking one and allowing three hits in six innings of work.
•
Clayton Bodine (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) went 2-for-3 in the first game, with
Jack Duffy (SR, Fridley, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) and
Zach Bakko (JR, Northfield, Minn.) collecting the other Auggie hits. All four Augsburg hits in the game were singles.
• Augsburg had its best chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh. Back-to-back singles by Bodine and Bakko put runners at the corners with one out, but a strikeout and pop-out ended the game.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Ten batters came to the plate for Jamestown in the top of the first inning, as the Jimmies scored six runs on four hits. Three solo home runs in the second inning gave the Jimmies a 9-0 lead, and a two-base error on a failed pickoff attempt enabled an unearned run to score in the third inning.
• Augsburg got a run back in the fourth, when
Josh Marlowe (SR, North St. Paul, Minn.) hit a solo home run to right-center field, the first run surrendered by Jamestown in its four games on the weekend at U.S. Bank Stadium. Another run came across in the seventh, when Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) plated pinch-runner
Mike Snow (FY, Corrales, N.M./Sandia Prep HS) on a sacrifice fly.
•
Rhett Hebig (SR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) went 2-for-3 for the Auggies in the second game, with Marlowe, Snow and
Walker Rogers (FY, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) claiming the other Auggie hits.
•
Dayton Danielson (FY, St. Charles, Minn.) allowed one earned run with a strikeout, walk and three hits allowed in four innings of relief.
Ryan Kain (JR, Gurnee, Ill/Warren Township HS) and
Spencer Saunders (JR, Liberty, S.C.) each pitched scoreless innings in relief.
