Speese leads Auggies to third straight win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Camryn Speese (FY, Bloomington, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) scored all of her 16 points in final 11 minutes, leading the Augsburg College women's basketball team to a 64-55 victory over the College of Saint Benedict in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After a slow first quarter, Augsburg shot 8-of-11 from the field in the second quarter to pull within four, trailing 33-29 at the half. The Auggies started the third quarter with a 9-0 run and stretched their lead to as many as eight in the frame. In the fourth quarter, Speese scored the Auggies first 14 points in a row, as Augsburg went on to claim the important MIAC victory.
• Augsburg is currently in seventh place in the MIAC standings with four league games remaining, and sits one game back from St. Mary's, who is currently in the sixth position. The top six teams make the conference postseason tournament.
• The Augsburg offense was led by Speese, who finished with team-highs in points and rebounds, posting 16 points and eight rebounds, while adding four steals and an assist.
• Also scoring in double figures for the Auggies was K'Aezha Wubben (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Hopkins HS) and Tamira McLemore (FY, Eagan, Minn.), who posted 14 and 11 points respectively. Wubben finished 7-of-8 from the free-throw line, while adding three rebounds and a pair of assists. McLemore went 2-of-3 from three-point range, adding three rebounds and two steals.
Arianna Jones (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) led all players with four assists, while adding five points and four steals.
• For the third consecutive game, the Augsburg defense forced more than 20 turnovers. The Auggies forced 26 Blazer turnovers on the night, picking up 16 steals in the process. Augsburg outscored Saint Benedict 22-12 in points off-turnovers.
• For the game, Augsburg shot 35.6 percent (21-of-59) from the field, while Saint Benedict was held to 33.3 percent (18-of-54) shooting. The Blazers claimed a 45-31 advantage on the boards. Despite the rebounding advantage, Augsburg posted a 16-10 advantage in second chance points.
 
FOR THE FOES
• Saint Benedict was led by Chelsey Guetter, who posted the lone double-double of the night, finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

• Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (2/11) at 1 p.m., when the Auggies host Bethel University in a women's-men's doubleheader at Si Melby Hall.
• The Blazers also return to action on Saturday (2/11) when the host Gustavus Adolphus College at 3 p.m.
