Auggies go outside, claim doubleheader sweep at Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- The Augsburg College baseball team went into the great outdoors for the first time this season, gaining a nonconference doubleheader sweep at Cornell College on Sunday afternoon. Augsburg scored a 7-6 win in nine innings in the opener and finished with an 11-6 win in the nightcap.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Mike Brookshaw (SO, Prescott, Wis.) hit a solo home run to break a 6-6 tie in the top of the ninth inning, and relief pitcher Spencer Saunders (JR, Liberty, S.C.) struck out three of the five batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth to pick up the save.
• Augsburg rallied from a 2-0 first-inning deficit and a 6-4 fifth-inning deficit to tie the game, scheduled for seven innings, and force extra frames. In the second, Brookshaw and Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) hit RBI doubles, and Jordan DeCroock (JR, Farmington, Minn.) hit a run-scoring single. Eric Olheiser (SR, Maplewood, Minn./Tartan HS) led off the third inning with a double, then scored on a single by Jack Duffy (SR, Fridley, Minn./DeLaSalle HS).
• Josh Marlowe (SR, North St. Paul, Minn.) connected on a two-run single in the sixth inning to tie the game at 6-6.
• Marlowe, Olheiser, Brookshaw and Clayton Bodine (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) each had two hits for the Auggies. Brookshaw scored two runs, as did DeCroock.
• Lincoln Hochmuth (SR, Cannon Falls, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) and Ryan Kain (JR, Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township HS) each pitched four innings for the Auggies, with each striking out two.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg scored the first nine runs of the game in the first four innings, then added two insurance runs in the seventh to cap the victory.
• Jordan Brandt (SR, Eagan, Minn.) struck out five while not walking a batter in five innings to claim the pitching win for the Auggies. Just one of the five runs charged to him was earned in the game. Charles Linder (SO, Harris, Minn./North Branch HS) struck out three while not allowing a walk in two innings of relief.
• A bases-loaded walk, a sacrifice fly by Rhett Hebig (SR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) and a two-run single by Marlowe gave the Auggies a 4-0 lead in the second inning.
• Four more runs came across in the third inning, with runs scoring on an error, a bases-loaded walk, a fielder's choice by Hebig and a sacrifice fly by Brookshaw.
• Mike Snow (FY, Corrales, N.M./Sandia Prep HS) hit a run-scoring single in the fourth, and RBI singles by Hebig and Marlowe capped the scoring in the seventh.
• Walker Rogers (FY, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) went 3-for-4 and scored two runs, while Bodine and DeCrook scored three runs each. Snow went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Bodine went 2-for-3.

FOR THE FOES
• Lucas Larson went 3-for-5 with four RBI in the first game for the Rams, while TJ Rausch went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
• Walker Breard, Lucas Larson and Austin Almon had two hits each for Cornell in the second game, with Breard scoring two runs.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg returns to U.S. Bank Stadium on Tuesday (3/9) at 9:30 p.m., with a nonconference doubleheader against Wisconsin-Stout.
