Auggies open MIAC play with split at Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg College baseball team opened Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a split of a doubleheader against Hamline University, falling 11-9 in the first game while winning 6-4 in the nightcap.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg built an 8-1 lead in the middle of the fourth inning, but Hamline rallied for the walk-off victory. The Auggies led 9-5 going into the bottom of the seventh, but the Pipers scored six runs in the bottom of the inning, including a two-out, grand-slam home run by Joe Setrum to clinch the win.
• The Auggies scored four runs in the third inning, with Rhett Hebig (SR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) hitting a two-run double and Mike Brookshaw (SO, Prescott, Wis.) and Walker Rogers (FY, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) hitting run-scoring singles.
• Four more runs came across in the fourth for the Auggies, as Josh Marlowe (SR, North St. Paul, Minn.) hit a two-run single, Zach Bakko (JR, Northfield, Minn.) hit an RBI double and Eric Olheiser (SR, Maplewood, Minn./Tartan HS) hit an RBI single. Another run came across in the seventh, as Jordan DeCroock (JR, Farmington, Minn.) reached base on an error, moved to third on a stolen base and groundout, and scored following another error.
• Hebig and Rogers had three hits each in the first game, while Brookshaw and Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) had two hits each. Buescher, Marlowe and DeCroock scored two runs each.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Lincoln Hochmuth (SR, Cannon Falls, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) had a strong pitching effort for the Auggies, striking out five while not walking a batter and allowing just seven hits in 8.1 innings of work -- the longest pitching effort for an Auggie this season. Only two of the four runs charged to him were earned. Clayton Bodine (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) claimed his second save of the season, striking out one of the three batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth.
• The Auggies scored twice in the first inning, as Hebig and Marlowe singled, Hebig scored on an error and Marlowe scored on a wild pitch. Another run came across in the fourth, as Buescher doubled to drive in Olheiser.
• In the top of the ninth, Rogers hit a two-run triple, then scored as Olheiser reached base on an error. In the bottom of the inning, the Pipers also scored three runs, but left the potential tying run at the plate as a strikeout ended the game.
• Hebig, Marlow, Rogers and Jack Duffy (SR, Fridley, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) had two hits each in the second game, with Hebig scoring two runs and Rogers driving in two.

FOR THE FOES
• Setrum had two hits and five RBI in the first game for Hamline, while Jacob Picht had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI
• Nick Kukurich had two hits and two runs scored in the second game, while Devin Rodgers drove in two runs.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (4/5) at 2:30 p.m., hosting St. Thomas in a doubleheader at Parade Stadium.
• Hamline is also back in action on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m., with a home doubleheader against Macalester.
