Auggies split MIAC-opening twinbill at Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg College softball team opened Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a split of a doubleheader at Macalester College on Saturday afternoon, winning 1-0 and losing 9-1 (six innings).

THE BASICS

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• The lone run of the first game came in the third inning, when Carly Dropik (SO, Alexandria, Minn.) led off the frame with a single, moved to second on a walk and stole third, then scored on an infield fielder's choice by Katie Parker (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS)
• Samantha Anderson (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) picked up her second shutout win of the season, striking out six while walking two and allowing just two hits in a complete-game effort. Macalester stranded six runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the second inning.
• Augsburg had four hits in the first game -- singles by Dropik, Haley Larson (SR, Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake HS), Taylor Mattice (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Cenntenial HS) and Jacquline Nichols (SO, Royalton, Minn.).

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg scored its lone run of the game in the top of the first inning, as leadoff hitter Dropik singled, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on an RBI single by Parker.
• Macalester scored three runs in the third inning and four runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of four errors in the two frames. Four of the seven runs allowed in the two innings were unearned. The Scots ended the game via the NCAA eight-run rule in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs.
• Augsburg was limited to four hits in the second game, with Parker collecting two hits. Dropik and Brianna Cline (SR, St. Clair, Minn.) also had base hits. 
• Courtney Larsen (SR, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) started and pitched four innings, with Carissa Struve (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) pitching the final 1.2 innings.

FOR THE FOES
• Nikki Caicedo had two hits, including a double, in the first game for the Scots. She also had two hits and an RBI in the second game.
• Julia Carpenter went 3-for-4 with a double and RBI in the second game, scoring three runs. G.G. Gunther had two hits, while scoring two runs and driving in two, and Morghan Bean had two hits and drove in two runs.
• Sophie Migacz pitched complete-game efforts in both games for the Scots, striking out six while walking two in the first game and striking out three while not walking a batter in the second game.

• Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Sunday (4/2) at 1 p.m., with a doubleheader at St. Thomas.
