Auggies sweep Concordia-Moorhead

MINNEAPOLIS -- Combining for 30 hits on the afternoon, the Augsburg College softball team claimed a pair of five-inning wins over Concordia-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Edor Nelson Field on Thursday, winning 12-0 and 13-5.

THE BASICS
SCORES: Augsburg 12, Concordia-Moorhead 0 (5 inn.); Augsburg 13, Concordia-Moorhead 5 (5 inn.)
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis, Minn.
RECORD: Augsburg 19-13 overall (7-7 MIAC), Concordia-Moorhead 8-22 overall (0-14 MIAC).

DOUBLEHEADER HIGHLIGHTS
• Two players went 5-for-7 in the doubleheader -- Haley Larson (SR, Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake HS) and Anesia King (FY, Cambridge-Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS). King scored four runs, while Larson scored three runs. Larson also drove in four runs.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Samantha Anderson (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) pitched a one-hit shutout -- her fifth shutout of the season -- to improve to 11-7 on the season. She struck out 11 while walking two, with the Cobbers' lone hit coming in the fifth inning.
• The Auggies pounded out 15 hits -- 13 singles and two doubles -- in the opening game, scoring five runs in both the first and fourth innings to end the game early via the NCAA eight-run rule.
• Augsburg scored five runs in the first inning, with Larson, Hollywood Hermanson (FY, Dover, Minn./Dover-Eoyta HS) and Amanda Niznik (SR, Columbia Heights, Minn.) hitting RBI singles, and Lauren Hurley (SR, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) driving in two runs on a single.
• Another run came across on an error in the second inning, and doubles by Niznik and Dropik plated a run in the third.
• Augsburg scored five runs in the fourth inning on five hits. Niznik hit an RBI single, Hurley plated a run on a fielder's choice, runs came across on an illegal pitch and an error, and Katie Parker (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
• Larson and Niznik had three hits each for the Auggies, with Larson scoring three runs. King, and Taylor Mattice (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Centennial HS) had two hits each.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• The Auggies took control in the second game with 15 hits, ending the contest in the fifth inning.
• After surrendering a run in the top of the first, the Auggies scored three runs in the first inning, with Larson hitting an RBI single and Niznik bringing home two runs on a fielder's choice.
• Augsburg scored five runs in the second inning. Brianna Cline (SR, St. Clair, Minn.) drove in a run on a single, and Katie Parker (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) and Larson each hit two-run singles.
• King led off the fourth inning with a triple to center field, then came around to score after Parker hit an RBI single.
• The Auggies scored four runs in the fifth inning, with Dropik hitting a two-run single, Cline hitting a run-scoring double and Parker ending the game on a run-scoring double.
• Cline, King and Parker had three hits each in the second game, with Parker driving in four runs and scoring twice, Cline driving in two runs and scoring three runs, and King scoring three runs. Jacquline Nichols (SO, Royalton, Minn.) scored two runs, and Dropik had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Larson had two hits and three RBI.
• Carissa Struve (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) struck out four and walked one in three innings of work, with Courtney Larsen (SR, Little Canada, Minn./Concordia Academy HS) striking out one in two innings of relief.

FOR THE FOES
• Concordia had eight hits in the doubleheader. Devonie Smith hit a triple and drove in three runs, while Kelly Riordan and Taylor Rasmussen each hit a double. Olivia Lien had two hits and an RBI.

• Augsburg hosts Bethel in a MIAC doubleheader on Saturday (4/22) at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
• Concordia hosts St. Catherine in a MIAC doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
