Auggies split with Gusties in final home doubleheader

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College baseball team closed the home portion of its schedule with a split of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday at Parade Stadium.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• Pitcher Jamie Kaye (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) pitched a two-hit shutout to claim the win in the first game, his second shutout and sixth complete game of this season. Throwing just 80 pitches (53 strikes) in his seven-inning effort, Kaye allowed just two hits and one walk in the game. He only allowed one baserunner, who reached on an error, over his final four innings of work.
Eric Olheiser (SR, Maplewood, Minn./Tartan HS) hit a two-run home run to left field in the second inning to give the Auggies the early lead.
• In the fourth inning, three straight hits -- a one-out triple by Mike Brookshaw (SO, Prescott, Wis.), an RBI single by Olheiser and an RBI double by Clayton Bodine (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) -- gave the Auggies a 4-0 lead. In the sixth, Brookshaw hit his second triple of the game and scored on an RBI single by Jordan DeCroock (JR, Farmington, Minn.).
• Brookshaw went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, and Olheiser went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI in the first game.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg and Gustavus battled through the first eight innings tied 1-1, but Gustavus scored five runs -- sending 10 batters to the plate and getting five hits -- in the top of the ninth inning to take a 6-1 advantage. Augsburg loaded the bases, but could not score in the bottom of the ninth. The Auggies stranded 10 runners on the bases in the second game.
• Augsburg scored its lone run in the first inning, as Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) walked, moved to third on a single by Jack Duffy (SR, Fridley, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) and scored on an RBI single by Brookshaw.
• Five pitchers saw action in the game for the Auggies, with starter Charles Linder (SO, Harris, Minn./North Branch HS) pitching four innings and allowing an unearned run with two strikeouts against a walk, and Jordan Brandt (SR, Eagan, Minn.) pitching four innings of scoreless relief with a strikeout and a walk.
• Augsburg was limited to four hits in the game -- singles by Duffy, Brookshaw, Bodine and DeCroock.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The game marked the final appearances at Parade Stadium for eight Augsburg seniors -- Brandt, Buescher, Duffy, Olheiser, Rhett Hebig (SR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS), Lincoln Hochmuth (SR, Cannon Falls, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS), Josh Marlowe (SR, North St. Paul, Minn.) and Cole Wilkie (SR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS).

FOR THE FOES
• Josh Chatfield and Brice Panning had hits for Gustavus in the first game.
• Chatfield, Panning and Isaiah Welckle had two hits each for the Gusties in the second game, with Welkle hitting a double. Panning and Brock Peterson had two RBI each in the second contest.
