Late penalty kick goal gives Augsburg victory

MINNEAPOLIS -- Aidan Sim-Campos (JR, St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS) scored on a penalty kick goal with 9:33 left in regulation time, lifting his Augsburg University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Superior in a nonconference game on Tuesday afternoon.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, UW-Superior 1
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 4-2-0 overall, UW-Superior 3-2-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Tied 1-1 in the 81st minute, Augsburg drew a foul in the penalty box, resulting in a penalty kick for Sim-Campos, who converted for Augsburg's first penalty kick goal of the season.
• Tommy Picka (FY, Victoria, Minn./Chaska HS) opened the scoring for the Auggies in the 12th minute. Sim-Campos slotted a nice pass to the right side of the six-yard box, finding Picka for a shot into the net.
• UW-Superior outshot Augsburg by a 13-12 margin in the game, including a 9-6 advantage in the second half.
• Clark Page (JR, Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS), seeing his first action of the year in goal, collected three saves for Augsburg. The Auggies also benefited from a "team save," as an Augsburg defender deflected the ball away from the goal on a long shot from midfield by the UW-Superior goalkeeper.
• Picka and Lionel Vang (SO, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) had three shots each for the Auggies.

FOR THE FOES
• Jon Bucklew tied the game at 1-1 with a blast from 20 yards out in the 69th minute.
• Dalton Von Kaenel had six saves in goal for UW-Superior.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "I thought Luke Falk and Daniel Hedstrom did a really good job organizing the defense and keeping the game in front of us, and Daniel in particular stood out as he was more active in the air and saved a sure goal off the line at the end."
• "Lionel and Aidan are a dangerous partnership and they both created a few chances for us tonight. Lionel drew the penalty, and that's going to happen more this year. He's just too shifty and quick with his feet. Tommy Picka got his first start tonight and made an impact immediately with his second goal of the season. He's been so calm and mature in the games and provides us some real potent, incisive passing as we get deep into our attack."
• "Overall, we have to continue to concentrate and make our scoring chances count. We all know how vital goals are, and as we move into MIAC play against a Bethel team we haven't beaten since 2014, we know even more how important it is to make them count."

UP NEXT
• Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday (9/16) at 1 p.m., with a game at Bethel.
