Auggie men score victory at Bethel in closing minutes

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- A goal by Taylor Sullivan (SO, Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) with 2:23 left in regulation time lifted the Augsburg University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Bethel University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, Bethel 1
LOCATION: Ona North Complex, Arden Hills, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 5-2-0 overall (1-0-0 MIAC), Bethel 2-4-1 overall (1-1-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Tied 1-1 in the 88th minute, Tommy Picka (FY, Victoria, Minn./Chaska HS) served the ball from the left corner into the penalty box, and Sullivan headed the ball into the net just as he collided with a Bethel defender in front. The goal was Sullivan's first of the season.
• Lionel Vang (SO, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) gave the Auggies a 1-0 lead in the 71st minute, connecting on a blast from 25 yards out to the lower left corner, which sped past a diving Bethel goalkeeper. Vang now has a team-best three goals on the season.
• Augsburg outshot Bethel by an 8-6 margin, including a 6-3 edge in the second half. Vang had four of Augsburg's eight shots in the game.
• Thomas Molski (SR, Woodbury, Minn./North St. Paul HS) had one save in goal for the Auggies.

FOR THE FOES
• JT Thweatt tied the game for Bethel with a goal in the 76th minute, assisted by Andrew Hintz.
• Colton Syler had one save in goal for Bethel.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "Typical MIAC soccer game today -- both teams with a little chess in them and a lot of heart. Credit to Bethel -- they have an insatiable fighting spirit about them and are going to get a lot more points this season."
• "Once Lionel turned and pushed the ball in front of him, we all knew where it was headed. He's a special talent and that goal was one more reason why."
• "Tommy Picka played a hand in another important moment for us, as he found a wide open Sully 15 yards out for the finish. Sully did well to pop it into the top corner just before being smashed by an opponent. That goal showed some good internal grit by our guys, responding the Bethel's goal a few minutes earlier."
• "We are grateful for a week the get some more guys healthy and back in our team, and a chance to sharpen up before we host another gritty and much-improved Saint Mary's team. Those guys took St. Thomas to the edge in a 2-1 game, and then had some bad fortune losing in OT with 10 players against St. Olaf. They are really good, and it is fun to see Charlie Reit doing well for them. We will have our hands full."

UP NEXT
• Augsburg hosts Saint Mary's next Friday (9/22) at 7:30 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
• Bethel travels to face Bethany Lutheran on Tuesday (9/19) at 7 p.m.
