MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg University nearly rallied from a 28-7 halftime deficit in the final minutes of play, but its comeback fell short in a 42-37 loss to Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football contest on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Gustavus scored the first three touchdowns of the game and built a 28-7 halftime lead, outgaining the Auggies by a 301-120 margin in the first two periods. But the Auggies outscored the Gusties 30-14 in the second half, cutting the lead to 42-37 with 4:58 remaining.
• Augsburg attempted an onside kick, but it only travelled five yards, giving the Gusties the ball at the Augsburg 40. The Gusties drove the ball to the Augsburg 5, but a rush for loss and a sack by
Jabri Guy (SR, Moline, Ill./Eagan (Minn.) HS) put the ball at the Augsburg 17 with 1:49 left. On a third-and-goal play, a Gustie pass was intercepted by
Matt Bowlin (SR, Chaska, Minn./Holy Angels HS) at the Augsburg 3, and he returned it 17 yards to give the Auggie offense a final chance with 1:36 left.
• The Auggies drove the ball on six plays to the Gustavus 39-yard line, but an Auggie pass was intercepted by Drew Fredericksen at the Gustavus 27 with 26 seconds left to seal the Gustavus victory.

Quinn Frisell (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) completed 27-of-44 passes for 451 yards and five touchdowns -- three to
Nick Heenie (JR, Victoria, Minn./Waconia HS), who caught nine passes for 133 yards. He scored Augsburg's first touchdown on a 27-yard pass from Frisell in the second quarter, caught the opening touchdown pass of the second half, a 22-yarder, then hauled in a six-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter.
• Three Auggies caught passes for more than 100 yards on the day. In addition to Heenie's 133 yards, Tiras Bolton (SR, Omaha, Neb./Omaha Westside HS) caught six passes for 108 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown pass from Frisell with 4:58 left in the game, and
Kyle Hughes (SR, Minnetonka, Minn./Minneapolis Washburn HS) caught four passes for 126 yards, including an 89-yard touchdown reception from Frisell in the third quarter.
Ray Guyton Jr. (SR, Stockton, Calif./St. Mary's HS) caught seven passes for 80 yards, and had a huge downfield block to spring Bolton on his late touchdown reception.
• In addition to his key sack, Guy led the Auggie defense with 13 tackles (11 solo), with 2.0 tackles for-loss and a fumble recovery in the third quarter. Frisell connected with Hughes for his 89-yard touchdown on the next play after Guy's fumble recovery.

Derek Glynn (SO, Lonsdale, Minn./Faribault HS) had 11 tackles (six solo) and a quarterback hurry for the Auggies, while
Mustafa Adam (SO, River Falls, Wis.) had nine tackles (three solo). In addition to his interception, Bowlin had six tackles and a fumble recovery.

Tyler Hanson (JR, Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) connected on a 34-yard field goal in the third quarter, and punter
Glenn Meyers (SR, Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS), last week's MIAC Special Teams Player of the Week, averaged 37.6 yards per-punt on seven punts, including a 53-yarder.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The teams combined for 1,036 yards of total offense -- 532 yards (430 passing, 102 rushing) for Gustavus and 504 yards (451 passing, 53 rushing) for Augsburg. Gustavus averaged 6.7 yards per-play on 79 plays, while Augsburg averaged 7.2 yards per-play on 70 plays.
• The 14 points scored by Gustavus in the second half were the first second-half points scored by an Augsburg opponent this season. Augsburg has outscored its foes by a 117-65 margin this season -- 60-14 in the second halves.
FOR THE FOES
• Michael Veldman completed 35-of-48 passes for 430 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Gustie offense.
• Jamison Beulke combined for 284 all-purpose yards in the game -- rushing 21 times for 99 yards and two touchdowns, while catching 14 passes for 185 yards.
• Josh Kirk caught seven passes for 116 yards and an 11-yard first-quarter touchdown reception, and Brice Panning caught five passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns.
• Avery Bachman had 151 return yards on six kickoffs, including a 55-yarder in the fourth quarter.
• Gustavus' defense combined to sack Augsburg's Frisell five times, including 1.5 sacks each from Casey Decker and Zeke Erickson. Decker led the Gustie defense with nine tackles (three solo), including 2.5 tackles for-loss. Matt Berkner had eight tackles (two solo).
