Augsburg remains unbeaten with 2-1 win at Crown

ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. -- The Augsburg University men's soccer team improved to 3-0-0 on the season with a 2-1 nonconference victory at Crown College on Tuesday evening.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, Crown 1
LOCATION: KleinBank Stadium, St. Bonifacius, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 3-0-0 overall, Crown 1-2-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg struck first in the 14th minute, as a Daniel Hedstrom (SO, Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) long pass downfield was retrieved by Aidan Sim-Campos (JR, St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS), who served the ball across the pitch to Lionel Vang (SO, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS). Vang then eluded a defender and slotted the ball across the goal mouth and in for his first goal of the season.
• The Auggies scored their second goal in the 62nd minute, quickly converting a steal deep in the Crown end into a goal. Following the steal, Sim-Campos served the ball from the left side, which Luke Falk (JR, Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) caught and converted on a second touch into the net for his second goal of the season.
• Crown cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal eight minutes later, but the Auggies held on for the victory. Garrett Kaelin (SO, River Falls, Wis./Hill-Murray HS) collected three saves to claim the win.
• Augsburg outshot Crown by a 28-11 margin in the game, including a 15-3 advantage in the first half.
• Peyton Boich (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) had seven shots for Augsburg, while Vang had ive shots.

FOR THE FOES
• Caleb Baumann scored Crown's goal in the 70th minute, assisted by Caleb Schluessler.
• Eli Etzel had six saves in goal in 68 minutes, relieving starter Justin Lao, who had two saves in 22 minutes.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "We played some really attractive soccer tonight, and I think the score should have been more comfortable than it was, but I was happy that we had to deal with some stress at the end. That will make us better as we head into a very challenging three-game home stand starting on Friday. Crown battled the entire game and kept coming, so credit to them for their effort and fortitude. They hit the crossbar three times, so really, it could have been even more stressful."
• "We scored two good goals, and had some incredible interplay today. Peyton was back to himself and Sully was a beast defensively. Lionel looked ready to roll the moment I walked up to the field, and he was impactful throughout the game. I thought he was more balanced with his decisions, and it really allowed us to get the ball rolling. Aidan took another smack to the face, but persisted and set up both goals; he's been outstanding this season. Luke is doing what a forward should -- scoring goals. We moved him from center back up top just before the Viterbo match, and he now has two goals in three games. Kousang Yang was outstanding tonight, and he has to be mentioned. He made a slight adjustment to his passing from Morris, and it paid off big time. He's been so reliable for us."

UP NEXT
• Augsburg has the first of a three-game stretch of home games against Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools on Friday (9/8) at 7:30 p.m., hosting Wisconsin-Whitewater at Edor Nelson Field.
