Slow start stifles Auggies in loss to Gusties

MINNEAPOLIS -- Gustavus Adolphus College scored 18 of the first 21 points of the game and held a double-digit lead for all but the first 4:49 of play, claiming an 84-58 win over host Augsburg University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball contest on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Auggies connected on just 2-of-13 shots from the field in the first quarter, while Gustavus hit 10-of-16 to take a 23-8 advantage after the opening stanza. The Gusties continued to pull away, leading by as many as 31 points in the second half.
Tamira McLemore (SO, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) led the Auggies with 16 points, hitting 6-of-8 from the field. She also pulled down five rebounds, had four steals and two blocked shots. The game was her ninth scoring in double figures and her sixth with five or more rebounds this season.
Aiza Wilson (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) came off the bench to score 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from three-point range. She also had two assists. Augsburg's leader with 29 three-pointers, the game was her sixth with three or more three-pointers this season.
Camryn Speese (SO, Bloomington, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) scored eight points with five rebounds.
• Augsburg was limited to just 33.3 percent (18-of-54) shooting from the field, though it hit 39.0 percent (16-of-41) in the final three quarters. Meanwhile, Gustavus connected on 54.4 percent (31-of-57) from the field. The Gusties outrebounded Augsburg by a 43-26 margin, and had 26 assists on 31 made baskets.

 FOR THE FOES
• Four Gusties scored in double figures, led by Kendall Thompson, who scored 19 points with eight rebounds and three steals. Miranda Rice scord 18 points with eight rebounds.
• Mikayla Miller scored 15 points with six rebounds and five steals, and Justine Lee scored 12 points with four assists, two steals and two blocked shots.
• Gustavus is ranked No. 25 in the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division III national poll, while it's receiving votes in the other Division III poll, by D3hoops.com.
