Offense barrage results in 6-3 Auggie victory

MINNEAPOLIS -- Claiming a season-high 53 shots on-goal, the Augsburg University men's hockey team used a barrage of offense to snap its five-game losing streak in a 6-3 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference triumph over Hamline University on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• In its 11th game with 30-plus shots on-goal this season, the Auggies claimed a 1-0 lead after one period, then scored three goals in the second and two goals in the third to collect the victory. The game was Augsburg's sixth with five or more goals scored this season.
Lukas Gillett (JR, Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS) claimed his first collegiate multi-goal game, scoring the final two goals of the contest for the Auggies. He scored from Matt Nehls (FY, Boulder, Colo./D.C. West HS) at the 12:40 mark of the third period, then scored from Chandler Madry (Jr, Bakersfield, Calif./Fairbanks (Alaska) BEST HS) at the 17:36 mark.
• Ten different Auggies figured in the scoring, with Madry, Eric Brenk (JR, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) and Nate Flynn (SR, Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) each claiming a goal and assist each. Will Peterson (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) and Luke Dietsch (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had two assists each, and Nehls, Evan Hesse (SR, Monticello, Minn./Palmer (Alaska) HS) and Max Pernhem (SR, Stockholm, Sweden/Dragonskolan) also claimed assists.
Austin Martinsen (FY, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) scored his first collegiate goal at the 4:14 mark of the second period, assisted by Hesse. 
Nick Schmit (JR, Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) had 30 saves in goal for the Auggies.

FOR THE FOES
• Jaycomb McCombs and Brady Crabtree scored power-play goals for the Pipers in the second period, and Russ Jordan scored a shorthanded, unassisted goal in the third period. Jordan added an assist for a two-point night.
• Making his first collegiate start in goal, Evan Robert had 47 saves for Hamline.

UP NEXT
• The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (1/6) at 7 p.m., with a game at Hamline's new hockey home, the TRIA Rink at Treasure Island Center in downtown St. Paul, Minn., the new practice rink for the NHL's Minnesota Wild. The rink is located on the top floor of the former Macy's building at the corner of 6th and Wabasha Streets in St. Paul.
