Young Auggies gain experience in nonconference win

MINNEAPOLIS -- With 23 different players seeing action in the game, the Augsburg University men's soccer team gained its ninth victory of the season, a 4-0 nonconference triumph over Viterbo University on Monday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 4, Viterbo (Wis.) 0
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 9-2-2 overall, Viterbo 2-8-1 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• In its final nonconference game of the season before the final three Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games of the regular season, Augsburg reserves gained plenty of good experience on the varsity level. Most of the starting 11 played just in the first half, and 12 reserves saw playing time in the game for the Auggies.
• Augsburg dominated possession for most of the game, especially in the first half, outshooting the V-Hawks 17-0 in the first 45 minutes. The Auggies scored twice in the opening 9:36 of play, then scored twice late in the contest, eventually claiming a 28-8 shots advantage. Augsburg also had 10 corner kicks in the game.
Emmanuel Egbujor (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park HS) opened the scoring at the 7:31 mark, taking a nice feed from Seth Theilig (JR, Appleton, Wis./St. Francis Xavier HS) from the left side and depositing it in front for his fourth goal of the season.
• Defender Daniel Hedstrom (JR, Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) struck for his fifth goal of the season -- all on set pieces -- just 2:05 after Egbujor's goal, heading home a corner kick by Lionel Vang (JR, Little Canada, Minn.).
• In the second half, the Auggies scored on a Viterbo "own goal," as a wide shot by James Gagnon (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) was redirected into the net by a Viterbo defender. But Gagnon was able to record a goal shortly after, taking a blast from 30 yards for his third goal of the season, with Tyler Johnson (FY, Maplewood, Minn./Como Park HS) assisting.
• A pair of Auggie first-year goalkeepers combined for the shutout victory, Augsburg's seventh shutout of the season. Ethan Derks (FY, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) did not have to make a save in the first half, and Zachary Berg (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Farmington HS) had four saves in the second half.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• With its ninth victory of the season, Augsburg has recorded its most wins in a season since finishing 10-7-1 in the 2013 campaign.
• Augsburg has now outscored its opponents by a 30-9 margin this season. The Auggies' nine goals allowed are second-fewest among MIAC teams, while its 30 goals scored are third-most in the MIAC.

FOR THE FOES

• Nate Regas had 10 saves in goal for Viterbo.
• Kaden Bergman had five shots, while Yoshi Kogiso had two shots for the V-Hawks.
