ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Goalkeeper
Garrett Kaelin (JR, Stillwater, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) stopped the last three penalty kicks he faced in the shootout in dramatic fashion, enabling the Augsburg University men's soccer team to advance in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason playoffs, after a scoreless two-overtime result with the University of St. Thomas in a quarterfinal game on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The game is officially recorded as a tie, but No. 5-seed Augsburg will advance to the semifinals of the six-team MIAC playoffs by claiming three goals to the Tommies' two in the penalty-kick shootout. The Auggies will advance to a semifinal date at top-seed Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday (10/31) at 2 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
• After collecting four saves in regulation time and overtime to record his fifth shutout of the season, Kaelin continued the dramatics in the shootout. After the Tommies scored their first two goals in the shootout, Kaelin made incredible saves on the final three St. Thomas shots to give the Auggies the advancement.

Lionel Vang (JR, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS),
Taylor Sullivan (JR, Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) and
Christian Metzger (SR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) scored goals in the shootout, while shots by
Peyton Boich (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) and
Daniel Hedstrom (JR, Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) were saved by St. Thomas goalkeeper Aidan Hogan.
• St. Thomas outshot Augsburg by a 9-4 margin in the game, but Kaelin recorded three saves in the first half and another in the second overtime to preserve the draw.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The shootout was the first for the Auggies since Nov. 13, 2008, when Augsburg advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III national playoffs after a 1-1 tie with Whitworth (Wash.), as Augsburg outscored Whitworth 4-2 in the shootout.
• Augsburg has outscored its opponents by a 37-11 margin this season. Its 37 goals are the fourth-most scored by
MIAC teams this season, while the 11 goals allowed are second-fewest in the conference.
