Brenk's penalty shot gives Augsburg OT victory

MINNEAPOLIS -- Eric Brenk (SR, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) scored a penalty shot goal at the 1:14 mark of overtime, giving the Augsburg University men's hockey team a 2-1 home victory over Saint Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Trailing 1-0 after two periods, Augsburg tied the game 92 seconds into the third period, as Alex Rodriguez (SR, Miami, Fla./Shattuck-St. Mary's (Minn.) HS) stuffed home a shot for his team-leading eighth goal of the season, assisted by Patrick O'Connor (FY, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) and Luke Dietsch (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS).
• Augsburg outshot Saint Mary's by a 24-21 margin in the game, but also had five shot attempts draw iron, hitting the Cardinal pipes.
• Seventy-four seconds into overtime, Brenk was tripped on a breakaway attempt, drawing a penalty shot, which he converted for his first penalty-shot goal of his college career. Brenk now has two goals on the season.
Nick Schmit (SR, Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) stopped 20 of the 21 shots he faced to pick up his second win of the season in goal.
• Chandler Madry (SR, Bakersfield, Calif./Faribanks (Alaska) BEST HS) and Tommy Carey (SO, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) had four shots on-goal each for the Auggies, while Brenk had three shots on-goal.

• Rodriguez now has eight goals on the season, standing second among MIAC players in overall goals. His 11 points are tied for third-most among MIAC players.
