NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Playing in its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff championship game since 2010, the Augsburg University men's soccer team came up just short of claiming the title, after host Carleton College edged the Auggies 4-3 in a penalty-kick shootout after a 1-1, two-overtime draw on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The game officially ended as a 1-1, two-overtime tie, but Carleton, the No. 25-ranked team in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III national poll, converted four penalty kicks to Augsburg's three in the shootout, enabling the Knights to claim the MIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III national tournament.
• The Knights scored on an "own goal" in the fourth minute, as a Carleton free kick was put into the net by an Augsburg defender.
• Augsburg tied the game at the 43:00 mark, as
Daniel Hedstrom (JR, Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) scored his eighth goal of the season -- all on set pieces, heading home a free kick by
Peyton Boich (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS).
• After a scoreless second half and two overtime periods, Carleton scored on its final four penalty kicks in the five-kick shootout to claim the title.
Lionel Vang (JR, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS), Boich and
Nick Zuchowski (FY, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) scored on penalty kicks for the Auggies.
• Goalkeeper
Garrett Kaelin (JR, Stillwater, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) had 12 saves for the Auggies.
• Carleton outshot Augsburg by a 21-9 margin, including a 3-1 margin in overtime. Vang had three shots, while Hedstrom had two shots.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg will hope to earn one of 19 "Pool C" at-large bids to the 62-team NCAA Division III national tournament. National tournament bids will be announced during a webcast on the NCAA.com website on Monday (11/5) at 12 p.m. (Central time).
• Augsburg was competing in its sixth MIAC postseason playoffs in program history and its third title game. The Auggies and Carleton played to a 0-0 draw, with Carleton winning the penalty kick shootout 5-3, in the 2008 MIAC final, and the Auggies claimed a 3-2 overtime win over Concordia-Moorhead in the 2010 MIAC final.
